I thought maybe it's just because you're old Hix?
...the modern way is certainly to charge for everything that used to be free, but at least he deserves it (unlike most "celebrities" who charge for their talks). I saw Jane Goodall a few years ago give a fascinating talk at a university and she doesn't charge a thing (...although I did make a donation and bought some merchandise and I assume Sir David's talk will come with a few more audio-visual tricks...).

And I saw Jane Goodall just last year at Melbourne Zoo, and I had to pay something like $80, probably because I did not know the things I did not know, you know?

The closest I´ve ever got to him was when I found the Trials of Life book with HIS SIGNATURE in my local library. (And then I tried to convince the staff to sell it to me, which they can´t do, so they suggested that I should borrow the book, "lose" it and bring a replacement So, now it´s "lost" in my bookcase.
