ISIS Database is no longer public

I know that this has a larger impact that just North America, but I wanted to post it here to let everyone know.

As the ISIS community transitions to the ZIMS application, the "species holding" information is not available for public display.

To request information about how many animals of various species are held in ISIS member institutions, e-mail news@isis.org.

Please clearly list for which species you are seeking information in your request.

International Species Information System

Perhaps this is during the transition period, because on the ZIMS FAQ page under the heading of Security it states:
Public can see who has a species of interest, how many. No more.

Which is essentially what we could see before.

ZIMS is likely to be public?

By re-reading the information I linked in my earlier post, it does sound like a new version possibly will be available to the public after the transition period. I have no idea how long the transition period will be since there are hundreds of institutions on ISIS that have to change over to ZIMS 2012.

The more I look at the information a new form of the database will likely be available someday. I have added several links below.

ZIMS 2012 Deployment Schedule

I will check back periodically to see if a new version is launched for public access and I will let everyone know.

In the meantime, before the Google cache is updated, you *can* do searches on Google to bring up the information you want directly - for instance a search for "margay ISIS" brought me to this page:

https://app.isis.org/abstracts/Abs76086.asp

Doesn't work for everything though, but as species are listed by genus, as long as a search for one species in a group works, you'll get the other species too.

Anyone interested in getting as many pages as possible saved? ;)

what im hoping for is that when ISIS (if they do) launches there new public site, you will be able to check out the zoos themselves and see what animals they have on display and off display compared to just searching for the animal itself. I like to know what zoos have off display :)

Google ISIS abstracts, click on the link and the species holdings menu loads.

That would be a great idea

This headline was a shock . A lot of us zoo geeks rely on these listings - I hope they are made public on the new system soon.

Google: write "ISIS abstracts" and species you want to look at, for example "ISIS abstracts Malayan tapir", click at the search result, and the genus Tapirus appears as before. It worked fins just now. No search at the site works.

I'm not getting any results at all. I'm really gutted there is no public access because I love that site.

My suggestion doesn't work any more. I'm afraid every back-door to ISIS animal holdings are closed now. Really sad.

I have had email confirmation from ISIS that public access will be restored when the conversion to ZIMS is complete. The problem is that the data is currently split between the ZIMS database and the old ISIS database so the current online system no longer provided accurate information.

All the evidence suggests the public access will return once the transition to ZIMS is complete, so hopefully just a question of time.

I'm just surprised that everyone is getting all woeful about it. As Ituri pointed out in post #2 the site clearly states the same information will be public again when they are ready.

I also remember when ISIS animal holdings were offline. I emailed them and the person who replied was very helpful, I think the reason for no public access was something to do with a datbase upgrade.

I was disappointed at first when the information was taken down, but very logical for a database upgrade. After all, who wants to stumble upon dead links? :P

I decided to go on ISIS today to see if there was a date posted as to when it will be back up and running. I checked the FAQ page (that I attached). I found 2 interesting things:

1. The public will only see only how many and what species of animals are at each zoo. (No longer male/female/births)

2. Only the zoo that OWNS the animal will be shown to have it. NOT the zoo that it is on LOAN to. That being said...
Is it going to say that San Diego has 100 koalas and other zoos don't have any??? Just wondering how that will work.
