Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2012 #2

Pandas Together Today.

The Giant Pandas are together today apparently as they think the female has ovulated(BBC news)

Zoo replied to me on facebook-sousliks and meerkats are sharing enclosure at the moment.

p.s. good luck pandas

2 days together and no matings have been witnessed with the giant pandas. They may be put together on Thursday morning for one last attempt.

BBC News - Edinburgh Zoo giant pandas fail to mate

They will not be any Giant panda cubs at Edinburgh Zoo this year, no matings were witnessed - the pair were not put together this morning after Tian Tian's hormone levels dropped this morning.

Ah well, it was year one out of ten! ;)

Possibly due to them only having been at the Zoo a few months. From the videos it looks like the female was fully receptive and it may have been the male who wasn't quite up to the mark this time around. One problem with all these captive Panda pairs is the males have no competition/stimulation from other males, as they do in the wild where several will vie for possession of an oestrus female. But obviously that can't be replicated in the Zoo.

They can only hope that next year he'll be more fully responsive.

I like the look of that enclosure, with the clumps of grass scattered around. Makes a change from the bare-sand-and-rock look.

Taken from facebook page may already be on this thread sorry if so (Polar Bea'sr meet up)

Walker the polar bear has met his new playmate for the first time at the Highland Wildlife Park.

New arrival Arktos was introduced to resident star Walker on Friday and the pair appeared to hit it off instantly.

Arktos arrived at the Highland park earlier this week, from Hannover Zoo in Germany.

Walker was due to be joined by a potential mate at some point this year, but the female picked out was found to be already pregant.

Instead they found Walker a companion and wrestling partner in the shape of the four-year-old Arktos.

Arktos was housed close to Walker's enclosure, to allow the bears to get used to each other's scents before they were introduced.

I believe this should be on the Highland thread not the Edinburgh one. ;)

I was very surprised that the mating attempts of the Pandas elicited little reaction from Zoochatters. I would have thought for Panda enthusiasts this was the highlight of the year, but perhaps because it failed there was nothing much to comment on.

I feel a bit of 'bah-humbug' Scrooge, but I'm really not that bothered by them. My friend wants to take her girls to see them, I'd go along to see the chimps and their enclosure.

(though I'd have a peep if they had a baby - I like a good coo as much as the next girl  )

So does anyone know why there is a banteng at Edinburgh and, if another member is correct in saying, why won't it be staying?

Was at the zoo on Friday and came face to face with the banteng. It was out in the old vicuña paddock at the camel house, there was only me and my girlfriend around and as we were walking up the hill the banteng came right up to the fence to greet us before accompanying us up the hill!A beautiful creature and another welcome addition to the zoo.

When up close to Bantengs you see there real size and structure. When I was there late last year there was just a single specimen, how many did you see?

Nice to see Chris West back in the UK,but I have to say I'm not sure if this is a good move for Edinburgh.

I don't know Chris West apart from what I've just read in the link on this thread, why do you think it's not a good move?

I have my reasons for posting that its probably not a good move for Edinburgh, and those reasons will stay off this forum! What I will say is look at the state the collection he is currently,at is in and then see if you think this is a good move.
