maybe its an African-American bear! :D

We really do need a like button!!!!

Going through the thread it appears Javan Rhino is leading the pack with six species (needs to get to Highland for the polar bear and Dudley for the Asiatic black bear), with zoogiraffe in second place with five species. Fancy that.
Yes but I have got the Asiatic Black bear at Dudley, and see as I normally take Javan_Rhino to Dudley when I go,he's not going to get to see it unless he takes his life into his own hands and risks public transport. We might be friends but I'm getting a bit competive now he has over taken me,but then I do know he is not going to get the Polar Bear, while I do have plans a foot to get that!

This challenge is getting exciting!

ZG and JR can fight it out for first place - I'm playing for an honourable third place of 7 ticks :P

This competition really is hotting up, mind I have a bigger mission to complete at Dudley, and that is the Geoffroy's cat :p

If I do by some miracle get up to Highlands, I have a lot more priorities up there as well :D

If I manage to go to Dudley this month, and spot the Geoffroy's cat, I'll have managed the following pattern:

January - Ocelot at Howletts
February - Margay at WMZ
March - Oncilla at Hamerton
April - Geoffroy's Cat at Dudley

I'll have to stop there though, unless I somehow get a plane to Sao Paulo to see their captive Colocolo in May ;)

Having visited Woburn 16/4/12 i'm now on 4 with the American Black Bear.Don't think i'll make it to Scotland before zoogiraffe,so i'm probably out of the running, but if i can see the 6 species in England by the time someone reaches 8 i'll be happy.

Think I will get the Syrian Brown Bear done at Dartmoor before getting to Scotland,as its far more interesting to me!!

Success ;) and with my visit to Dudley, my total stands as follows:

Giant Panda - 09/01/2012 at Edinburgh
Sun Bear - 09/01/2012 at Edinburgh
Spectacled Bear - 27/01/2012 at South Lakes
European Brown Bear - 18/02/2012 at Welsh Mountain Zoo
Asiatic Black Bear - 29/04/2012 at Dudley

Finally managed a visit to Dudley, which now brings my total to 7:

Spectacled bear [Chester]
European brown bear [Whipsnade]
Sri Lanka sloth bear [Whipsnade]
Sun bear [Edinburgh]
Giant panda [Edinburgh]
American black bear [Woburn]
Asiatic black bear [Dudley]

I like how you say 'only' as if I'm on the verge of actually achieving this, and as if Polar bear isn't the hardest one to see :p

Well, in my eyes you already have the hardest one to see ;) all the others can be done with public transport; American Black Bear cannot.

Hopefully will get Polar Bear in a fortnight :) and hopefully the Sloth Bears in August or September sometime.

Nice :p - hoping to get Polar bear this year, but don't think I'll get polar bear at Highlands unless I'm lucky :p

With my recent visit to HWP, my total now stands at:

Giant Panda - 09/01/2012 at Edinburgh
Sun Bear - 09/01/2012 at Edinburgh
Spectacled Bear - 27/01/2012 at South Lakes
European Brown Bear - 18/02/2012 at Welsh Mountain Zoo
Asiatic Black Bear - 29/04/2012 at Dudley
Polar Bear - 06/07/2012 at Highland Wildlife Park

Still hoping to get the Whipsnade Sloth Bears before the year is out :) though I've no hope of seeing the Woburn Black Bears unless they move to another collection, which they won't ;)

Highland Wildlife Park is a Long Way

An update to my list:

Asiatic black bear (Dudley - 30/01/2012)
Brown bear (WMZ - 02/03/2012)
Giant panda (Edinburgh - various dates in June)
Sun bear (Edinburgh - various dates in June and July)
Spectacled bear (Chester - various dates throughout the year)
Polar bear (Highland Wildlife Park - 21/07/2012)

Hopefully I'll get to Whipsnade in a week or two, then Woburn for the complete set. Fingers crossed!

Seems the competition is now on with SMR looking to be the winner. ;)

It's all getting quite exciting as we "move onto the final lap".

I've got to say I'm impressed at how many species a number of people have seen given the spread of bears across the UK and the amount of travel necessary to see most of them (let's face it, this is a near-impossible challenge for anyone very south of the Midlands and still a serious challenge for anyone else). I'm amazed we're seemingly getting to the end of the challenge so soon which means:

1. I need to get off my backside and get some kind of trophy organised (experience has taught me if you're taking something (even vaguely) absurd seriously it's best (i.e. more fun) to go the "whole hog");

2. I better start thinking of next years challenge.

Personally, I'm not sure it's cut and dry who'll win yet. All it takes is some kind/mischievous soul to come out of the blue and offer TeaLovingDave a lift around Woburn and things would really hot up. Time will tell.............

You never know what could happen if it means I can visit Edinburgh, without having to see those Black and White things:p:D
