Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2012

One thing which I would just like to say was that having done the walkthrough lemur area on Friday I thought it made a really nice addition to the train.:) The ring tailed lemurs were really lively and were enjoying the public attention which they were recieveing.

On my last visit I was impressed by what they'd done with the White Tiger enclosure (though it wouldn't have been my choice of usage) but I wish they hadn't made it part of the road train, I dread to think wht the queues will be like on busy days- I hope they don't plan on charging for the train too!

Does anyone happen to know if any progress has been made on the new Sun Bear enclosure? Also will the area/hill be used just for the sun bear enclosure or will the area be themed and also hold other species??

great news, remember when i was a kid the old tortoise exibit nearby the old elephants enclosure which there was loads of tortoises and 1 giant one :).

Yes thats one of my most vivid memories of visiting the zoo iwhen I was a child in the late 80's/early 90's.
Does anyone know what species that large tortoise was?

On my last visit, work had restarted on the new sun bear enclosure. It will be named 'Bears of the rising sun'.

How much longer is this going to take?! In my opinion they should have been moved to the white tiger enclosure long before it became a lemur walkthrough! The sun bears need was greater!

I agree pipaluk. If they had sasha's old enclosure they would of had a lot of room to live fulfilling lives seeing as their first lives were poor

I also agree with Pipaluk's point. The White tiger enclosure would have been perfect for the pair, lush, had a viewing platform (For the Tiger) and is big enough for two specimens possibly more.

Any idea if any of the Elephants has been mated with the bull? (Tembo)

I went for a morning visit today, and have a report of the trip that includes some new species arrivals!

- The reed frog enclosure has been completely cleared prior to the arrival of the golden mantellas
- Also regarding amphibians, does anybody know when the red-eyed tree frogs that have supposedly been off-show for quite a time are due to be integrated to the poison-dart frog exhibit?
- Construction on the new sun bear enclosure has re-commenced
- The indoor barn of Familiar Friends is closed and has been completely gutted (hopefully the pygmy gliders are somewhere off-show)
- No sign of any tamanduas at all. I hope that they plan to continue with the species
- All four of the new Syrian rock hyraxes were out, and I saw possibly three L'Hoest's guenons, although only one ventured outside fully
- The four new demoiselle cranes are in the old blue crane/duiker enclosure and mixed with the dik-diks
- Both spotted hyenas were finally up and active in their main enclosure
- The new baby aardvark is now on-show with the rest of the adults in the main burrow
- One of the Victoria crowned pigeons seems to be sitting on a nest
- Found out that the hideous giant anteater statue isn't actually separate from the actual anteater enclosure, with one of the anteaters sniffing and wandering around the base of the structure
- The smooth-coated otters were occupying themselves today by following a jackdaw that was perching in the trees near their enclosure.
- A huge amount of work seems to have been done on the new giant tortoise enclosure
- I went on the road train (against my better judgement) and as well as seeing the black-backed jackals, the train driver said that the old red ruffed lemur enclosure near the lemur island is home to a new group of red-bellied lemurs. I didn't see them or any signage indicating this, but I assume they will be going into the Lost Madagascar walkthrough.
- And finally, in the old L'Hoest's guenon indoor enclosure at Chimp World, there is a fabulous new male Francois' langur- a female is due to arrive by the end of the week. Having never seen a Francois' langur before, I was very excited and also very annoyed, as my camera battery had gone dead.

Nice! - Glad to see a new holder for the Francois' Langur. Any idea where the male (PL, London, Twycross?) came from and where the female is coming from?

It could have come from Belfast, and the female could becoming from any of the ones you have mentioned or from Rotterdam!

Pelicans

What has happened to the pelicans that used to be on the lake ? Went on Sunday and they are no where to be seen and the little mess fence which use to spilt the lake in two has now been removed.
