More pictures of zoos..not just animals!

Does anybody else get a little tired of seeing reems of photos in the zoochat gallery of animals that could have been taken anywhere? I would much rather see more pictures of enclosures, exhibits, and facilities at zoos.

If I wanted to look at close up quality pictures of individual animals I would go on flickr or similar websites

The gallery really does need a big sort out, so much space is wasted my either loads of shots of the same thing or loads of close ups, I don't mind a few but loads isn't needed. Certain members upload about 20 of the same fence and it drives me crazy when browsing!

I'm not really a photographer so maybe i should stay out of this, but it does seem that some post 3 or 4 close ups of the same animal at times, when the best one only would suffice! And if you dont get a better shot than previous visits then why bother posting at all?

We have had this sort of thread before and I must admit I too do get a little tired of the same photograph being uploaded more than once but I must admit I too have done the same thing in the past.

When I joined the Forum at first I got carried away with uploading everything and anything and didn’t take in to account how many times I uploaded a photograph of the same animal, yet after a few times of doing this and a polite message in the p/m’s I did realise my mistake and since then have tried to manage my uploads better.

I appreciate when new members do join they like to see their photographs in the galleries of their favourite zoo’s it does give you a bit of a buzz, yet after a while could they please slow down on the uploads.

I am not blaming new members but understand the initial buzz it’s some of the other members that still upload many photographs of the same animal time and time again I think a nice little polite message just asking them to calm down just a little in the P/M’s from the moderators to the members concerned should do the trick.

I do agree with the notion that there should be more photographs of enclosures and facilities around our favourite zoos as the site is called ZOOCHAT and not just ANIMALCHAT.

I myself have stopped uploading as many animal photographs and will start to concentrate on the enclosure and facilities side much more as has been said a tiger is a tiger and a pig is a pig so come on why don’t more of us take the challenge and start to upload more enclosure and facilities photographs and this way we can all see what the zoo actually looks like.

I agree, I often prefer to take photos of enclosures or designs that I find interesting or of historical importance, as well as of the animals themselves too.

No - less pictures of bits of wood and wire more pics of what goes in them :)

Though I agree - not the same animal from 20 different angles please, or the same animal with 10 shots over a 20 second time span!!

My favourite photos on here are gentle lemur's beautiful animal portraits - real skill and beauty. Looking at a fence just doesn't evoke the same emotions in me I'm afraid.

.

It would be a very sorry zoo that didn't have any animals in it.

I go for animals and enclosures, though I must admit more so the animals. If an enclosure is interesting and could cause discussion then I may post a picture, likewise if an animal is interesting or the photograph is of a half decent quality :)

For me, the ideal gallery is about 50/50 animals/exhibit views. All of one or all of the other is much less interesting.

@Mazfc it was meant to read ZOOCHAT and not just ANIMALCHAT have now edited the line.

Mind you some enclosures I have seen this year would be better without the animals in them!

It's not fair to name zoo's or collections who are doing thier best to look after the animals within their collections.

I like to see exhibit pictures, especially from zoos that I probably won't be visiting anytime soon. I love it when members like Toddy, Snowleopard, Maguari, and others go on holidays and the first few photos get uploaded and you know you can expect a lot more in the next few days.

I like to see a wide range of images in the Gallery, not just portraits and enclosures, but photos which also show cage furniture, aviary planting, zoo signage, keeper activity (within the Gallery rules) and the behaviour of the animals.
I think we are all guilty of posting too many duplicates from time to time; it can be hard to leave out an image that you really like. I try to be really selective with my zoo photos and very very selective with my photos of wild animals.

One thing that really bugs me in the gallery is when people don't label their pictures and you have no clue what you are looking at. It doesn't take long to just type a short description.

It's important to remember that a lot of zoochat members are keen photographers and look at the photos of other members in an attempt to improve their own photographic skills - which is why photos are published with details of the camera and the setting used to achieve that particular photo. I think i can safely say that there is rather a lot more skill required in photographing the inhabitants than in providing accurate (though essential) studies of enclosures although a lot of thought needs to be included in the composition of these in order for them to be of any value.

I have rarely seen such fabulous photos as those uploaded by Eagle for example and take careful note of the settings used in an attempt to improve my own shots - but i agree that a 50/50 ratio satisfies everyone.

Incidentally, I used to think my photos were quite good until I started to look through the galleries here and now I know that I've got a lot to learn.

I was just about to post the same. A gallery with 50/50 animal/exhibit images is the perfect gallery for me, too.

I'd still rather people didn't upload a dozen photos of the same animal from the very same zoom and angle, though!

I'll be honest - I prefer animal pics. I take pictures of animals generally for the reason taking photos of buildings doesn't interest me. That goes for buildings in zoos too and the less it looks like an animal is in a zoo the better also.

As for the number of photos. I will generally take about 200 on a trip to the zoo. About 40 of those might make the cut to my flickr account - only a few might be of the same animal. I might post one or two in the gallery (if I can get it working so it doesn't post 6 of the same image again :)). I try not to spam my photos about too much. I'm actually finding the gallery potentially very useful for identification. I take photos of the signs at the zoos etc but occasionally there is a bird or butterfly or something I just can't figure out.
