Singapore Zoo Singapore Zoo News 2011-2015

Singapore Zoo is sending a female Douc Langur to Zoorasia, Yokohama Japan on a long-term breeding loan. Apparently the first such export ever undertaken by the zoo.

RARE ?COSTUMED APE? TO GO FOR A JAPANESE ADVENTURE Wildlife Press

According to ISIS, Zoorasia holds 2 male Douc Langurs.

Excellent news.

True Zoorasia has held these for a long time.
Unrelated to the doucs at Singapore or Bangkok so important for the gene pool. It would be nice to swap another female for a male ...

I think quite number of species of animals gone from Singapore zoo. Animals included such as some of the African animals ( Dromedary camel, Barbary Sheep, Gemsbok, Ostrich and etc ), Goral, Nilghai and many more. Where do these animals gone? Are they died or off display or exported to other zoos? What is actually happened for these missing animals ?
I do know that Polar bear exhibit is under construction and the other South American animals are off display for the transfer to the upcoming River safari.

One more thing. Which species of animals have been transferred to Night safari from Singapore zoo when it is opened in 1990's and how many species of primates actually present in the zoo now? (because previously I got read that there is about 70 something of species of primates in the zoo)

I get to know from the WRS official page that there will be an upgrading work in Elephants of Asia and new attraction called Kampung Mandai. What it is actually about? For the Night safari, are they going to upgrade the tiger and bear exhibit? How they going to renovate and design these exhibits? Glad if u help me to solve these.

The zoo made a conscious decision to phase out large ungulates in the early 2000s, which is not a bad move considering the zoo doesn't have large expansive enclosures to suitably display hoofstock. All the species you mentioned except goral have been phased out. Most of the animals were exported. The goral are presently off-exhibit.

Too many to list! Many many species were transferred, from elephants to tigers to binturongs. 30 species of primates are on exhibit at the zoo now, with another 10 or so species off-exhibit (most destined for River Safari).

I believe the new "Elephant Walk in the Wild" is an upgrade of the existing elephant ride area. "Kampung Mandai" will be some sort of recreated village depicting Singapore of the past - not sure what animals will be displayed, if any at all! Both will begin construction after River Safari opens as the land they're being built on is now used to house the River Safari's animals.

For Night Safari, the new tiger exhibit refers to the relocation of the Indo-Malayan Region to the last stretch of the tram ride route, to make way for the expansion of the Equatorial Africa zone. I don't know what new animals will fill the expanded African zone. A giraffe drive-thru was proposed some time back, that might be a possibility. I don't know how the bear enclosure will fit into the new plans, nor what bear species is being referred to. Construction for the new tiger exhibit has started, should be done by early next year. The upcoming Australasian exhibit has been named "Wallaby Trail" and looks set to open in September.

What sub-species of Tiger is being proposed for the new exhibit at Night Safari?

...The Douc Langur arrived safely at Zoorasia btw

I do hope they will transfer the male that will eventually miss out on breeding to Singapore or Dusit in Thailand to integrate their genes in the captive pool. Perhaps another female can be sourced as well from either of these collections for Zoorasia???

Singapore has surplus females, but they're probably adopting a wait and see approach for now.

You are right. I just hope when they get to breed the male that falls over will come either to Singapore or Bangkok. It would put a new bloodline into the captive gene pool.

not big news, but there are some baby macropods at the zoo:
Singapore Zoo welcomes baby roos
The Singapore Zoo has recently welcomed four new baby kangaroos, allowing visitors to see animals not usually found in our climate.

The two Eastern grey kangaroos and two Agile wallabies are the newest additions to the Australian Outback - a zone dedicated to showcasing creatures from Down Under.

Bella, an Eastern grey who lost her mother earlier this year, is close to 12 months old now.

The Singapore Zoo said Bella is coping well now despite showing signs of depression in the first few days of her mother's demise.

Another Eastern grey, Tayla, gave birth in December last year and is currently nursing a joey in her pouch.

With the addition of the two Agile wallaby babies, the total collection at the Australian Outback is now 10.

Known also as sandy wallabies, one of the new babies have been named "Krookie" by the staff at the zoo.

While the latest kangaroos and wallabies are not endangered species, Assistant Director of Zoology of the Singapore Zoo Alagappasamy Chellaiyah said their presence was still important.

"(They) allow visitors to see animals not usually found in our climate and learn more about wildlife in general," he said.

"In the long run, we hope to cultivate a love for the environment and all creatures, endangered or not," he added.

Feed-a-Roo sessions, where visitors to the zoo can feed and interact with the animals, take place every day at 11.00am and 4.00pm.

Visitors may also stop by a new exhibit of the endangered Goodfellow's tree kangaroos. The pair of Goodfellows, natives to Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea, are classified as endangered in the wild as they are mainly threatened by human activities such as hunting and encroachment in their natural habitats.

Other highlights at the Australian Outback include the cassowary and carpet python.

is that the one that was in the Fragile Forest? So they are in the Australian section now?

I was more excited to note the arrival of a male Goodfellow's from Krefeld Zoo. Hopefully he'll hit it off with the female that's been living alone at the zoo for a couple of years.

So am I. Hope they will go on to breed soon.
Any idea on the origins' of Singapore's female?

she came from San Diego.

If I have my recollections correct now, the zoo had Matschie's tree kangaroos previously, which went to America, and they got in the new female Goodfellow's who was housed in the Fragile Forest where I saw her. Then she was removed off-display at some point. Now apparently back on display in a new exhibit with a new male.

That's about right. The female Goodfellow's was transferred to the Australian Outback section after being removed from Fragile Forest. She has been on display in a moated exhibit all this while but with the new male, the exhibit underwent some upgrading to give it more space and better den facilities.

The Zoo's 35-year old female polar bear Sheba has been euthanized due to age-related ailments. Her son Inuka, 21 years old, is now the sole polar bear left at the Zoo.

S'pore Zoo's beloved polar bear dies

Both have been kept off-exhibit for the past 2 years while their old exhibit is being rebuilt. The new polar bear exhibit is just about a month away from completion and is scheduled to open in early 2013. I'm not sure what the plans are now, as WRS officials had previously stated that they would not import any more polar bears.

@Zooish: Thank you for your endlessly informative updates of this world-renowned zoo. Do you know if the new polar bear exhibit is specifically-designed for that species or could grizzlies (or another bear species) inhabit the space instead? At Denver Zoo this past summer there was a grizzly bear in one of the polar bear exhibits and a rotational policy exists at other zoos such as Louisville as well.

you should be able to find a picture of what the polar bear enclosure is planned to look like on post #37 of this thread http://www.zoochat.com/266/river-safari-details-revealed-150718/index3.html

It is a bit of a tricky one for the zoo if they aren't going to import more polar bears, but I sort of suspect they will.

I'm leaning more towards snowleopard's example. The polar bear exhibit's plan has been changed a bit from what was originally released ( http://wrscomsg.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/pic-3.jpg ). I can't confirm it at the moment, but it does seem like there may now be more land space than pool space. So grizzlies could be an option.

While its not impossible for the zoo to backtrack on its earlier position and bring in new polar bears, especially with the new enclosure that is a significant improvement from the former, it will have to consider the reaction from the local animal rights camp (primarily ACRES) which is increasingly vocal and assertive.
