Zoo Leipzig Leipzig zoo news 2012

The last Virginia opossum died at the last weekend.

Thanks for all the updates Bjoern! Do you know if anything has replaced the opossums in the tunnel?

Young Eastern Quolls (born 2011) replaced the Opossums.

Red-necked fruit bats or Indian flying foxes will populate the Gondwanaland air space soon.

The gender of the five Maned wolves, born 2012, has been identified as 2,3.

A male South African bat-eared fox arrived from Prague Zoo to replace the Servals at Gondwanaland.

A Western eurasian griffon vulture hatched.

Jolly good the latter! Is that griffon hatching a "first" for the zoo?
(have never known them to be bred there, I might be wrong though ..., so if someone can fill in the blanks .. be my guest).

The first Western eurasian griffon vulture hatched at the zoo in the 1940s, the first in Germany. Until the late 1960s several chicks hatched every year. Unfortunately the air quality in the city became worse and worse during the late 60s and so on, so the times of frequent breeding were finished. No more than 7 years ago a time of frequent breeding started again with young individuals from other zoos.

Three young bonobo females (Lucy, Lexi and Muhdeblu) arrived from Jacksonville Zoo/USA.

It is the first bonobo import, a genetically exchange, from the US since 1992.

Thanks for explaining and clearing that up. I never knew that Leipzig had such a long tradition with breeding griffons. Incidentally, any of these vultures still alive within the present European population?

The bonobo import stands out as a MILESTONE ACHIEVEMENT! :) :) :)

No idea where you got that information from. Last bonobo import from the US was in 1997.

You are right, I forgot "Jill" in 1997 and "Lina" came in 1993...

Adult male False gharial "De Gaullee" arrived at Gondwanaland from Tierpark Berlin to breed with female "Nima".

Two young tomistomas, imported from Malaysia 2010, were shipped to Berlin to replace the adult one.
