Fresno Chaffee Zoo Fresno Zoo News 2011

The spot necked otters will NOT be part of the new expansion - they will be in the old (actually current) sea lion exhibit in the center of the zoo.

The expansion will be... actually I forgot what he said except for elephants (but there will be other animals). Yes, they will build an african elephant exhibit, get a new group of africans, and phase out their current (small) asian elephant exhibit.

I believe construction starts next year (2013) with an opening sometime in 2014.

Thanks for the update AZ. In the past the otters have been announced as part of the new Africa exhibit, so I'm guessing that the old seal exhibit will be a transitional exhibit, but time will tell. I'm really looking forward to seeing their new sea lion exhibit.

I'm really looking forward to seeing their new sea lion exhibit.

I just posted a series of photos in the gallery. We (meaning the five of us from Reid Park Zoo who visited) got a tour of the construction site from Fresno Zoo director, who used to be the curator at Reid Park.

That would be great if another zoo, especially in the "southwest" (meaning not oregon or washington but including california even though it's not a southwest state), gets Cheetahs. Hopefully construction goes smoothly and the zoo is able to realize this plan. :D

Thanks for posting. This looks like a really exciting project.

It is unclear what otter species are going to be at the zoo. From what Arizona Docent heard the old seal lion exhibit is going to be converted to an African spot-necked otter exhibit, while this article mentions river otters. It is quite possible that the article is wrong.
