Auckland Zoo Auckland Zoo news

article about the new baby squirrel monkey. The bit I've put in bold is presumably an editing mistake, as the monkeys aren't on display yet; I'm assuming it simply means the mother has been separated from the other monkeys for the moment.
Auckland Zoo's baby squirrel monkey creates stir | Stuff.co.nz
A baby squirrel monkey has caused a stir at Auckland Zoo after it was born at the wrong time of year.

Auckland Zoo spokeswoman Grace Honney said mum Ratteplan was among a group of squirrel monkeys that were brought to the zoo from Europe a couple of months ago. The baby was born a couple of weeks ago.

"We got them from Europe and they were in a Northern Hemisphere [breeding] cycle," she said.

"We didn't know she was pregnant - with animals it's hard to tell until they have the baby."

Honney said while the baby was supposed to be born in the warmer months it appeared to be healthy.

"It's feeding well but we're keeping an eye on them, they seem to be doing great," she said.

"We're fairly confident they will be fine because Ratteplan has done it all before."

The family of squirrel monkeys have been removed from display while the new baby is introduced.

Honney said keepers were not sure the of the baby's sex and would not discover it for a while.

"They stay quite close to the mother. When he or she gets older we will be able to do those type of things," she said.

"We're letting them bond."

Members of the public will get a chance to name the new addition with a promotion which runs until the end of the week.

"We're hoping they get names of South American origin because that's where squirrel monkeys are from," she said.

"The primate team will pick the top five which will go to the public vote."

People can submit their suggestions by visiting the Auckland Zoo website.

An already expanding population, excellent news.

Shame about the mother's name though, what were her keepers thinking?

what are you talking about? Ratteplan is Swedish for "steering planes" :D

I thought I had found an article yesterday saying what all the Auckland Zoo's squirrel monkeys were named but now I can't find it.

I would have liked to see that. Did a search myself but couldn't find it either.

....and I'm starting to think that keeper was Dutch (mooi means beautiful, and Romy is a EuroDance member from the Netherlands!!* :D)

*an edit for those not familiar with Dutch music, Romy van Ooijen was one of the members of the second version of awesome band 2 Unlimited

I visited yesterday. Here are a few changes:
The male Eclectus Parrots are currently in the old Fruit Bat enclosure.
The birds of The Islands exhibit are still off display.
The meerkats in the 'isolated' meerkat enclosure are off-display (I think they are currently in the right half of the tunnel enclosures).
A water hole lunch area is being constructed in Lion Plaza.
The squirrel monkeys are on display. After hearing that Auckland Zoo will "send out an invite for a FOTZ early opening soon", I was looking forward to going but I didn't receive anything which was disappointing.. They were not on display when I the enclosure checked yesterday. I saw that "here now" had been stuck on the 'coming soon' signs and two nets were leaning against the wall.
It also appeared that some space had been cleared behind KidZone for the new giraffe house.
The leopard tortoises are now off-display for the Winter season.

I wonder what the zoo will put in the old Golden Lion Tamarin enclosure now. There's supposedly an agouti in there, but I've only ever seen it once and that was a while ago.

I have seen agouti quite a few times in there, although apparently they do just have one now. It is hardly an appropriate exhibit for just agouti however, with its focus clearly on an arboreal species. It would be awesome for a sloth, or possibly the macaws, but I think that it will be used to house surplus CTT or GLT tamarins in the near-term, and eventually a new species of Callitrichid, such as Emperor Tamarin or Common Marmoset will be bought in.

Turns out I did receive the invitation. Apologies.

a female red panda called Bo was imported from Melbourne Zoo in July, and is being paired with Auckland's male Sagar.

- A new underwater sea lion encounter will be launched soon.
- Lazarus will be transferred to Australia within the next fortnight, in the hope that Ngala will breed.
