Chester Zoo Chester Zoo updates *3

Notes from today:

Despite there already being one Congo Buffalo calf, there look to be more on the way - one of the females was looking particularly uncomfortable. This particular cow was absolutely huge, more rotund than I've ever seen in any animal, particularly in an ungulate.

On the other side of the path, Doto was getting very close to Aoife, though she wasn't particularly impressed and ran halfway across the paddock.

Unfortunately my attempts at seeing an Aardvark anywhere other from the shelf at the back of the indoor exhibit continue to be in vain. Meanwhile, the adult female Otter in the Babirusa exhibit was out - I couldn't see any pups, but then again about five children (and a few adults as well) had climbed over the stand-off barrier and were taking photos over the glass, and were a bit closer to Sausu than would be preferable.

Thank you for the update Harry. Two questions;

1. Are 'Asani' and 'Kitani' still in Tsavo '1'?

2. Were both Bears together?

Kitani and Asani were in the main exhibit. Kitani was in the paddock next to the Painted Dogs, and Asani had access to the central paddock. Ema and Sammy were in the old houses and Zuri, Malindi and Magadi were in the building by the car park. Bear in mind that this is, as always, subject to change and rarely has any significant meaning.

I believe the bears were separated, Sangay was on the side nearest to the African Paddocks in the West Zoo, and I didn't see Franka. It would appear that they were separated.

Thank you. Chester's Rhino situation fascinates me!

Seems half of ZooChat was at Chester today!

Further note - the rejuvenation of the mammal collection diversity continues with the welcome return of Belanger's Tree Shrews (Tupaia belangeri) to the Elephant House (back in their original enclosure and showing well).

Did well with the other new species - Red Titi, Banteng and Lesser Kudu all pleasingly spotted. A good show from the bears late on, and from the Gambian Pouched Rat as well. Some very satisfying youngsters around at the moment - the Babirusas and Onagers in particular.

Managed a first sighting of the Banteng and Kudu myself - still yet to see the Titis though!

A welcome return - shame they couldn't get hold of a different species though, as treeshrew diversity in Europe has plummeted.

I wholeheartedly agree with you maguari on your point about the further diversification of the mammal collection, good to see the zoo stepping up to the plate as the UK's no.1 zoo.
With more to come soon with the Islands developments and masterplan as a whole.

Having quickly checked ZTL, the tree-shrew diversity plummet has been bigger than I thought!

Only 5 years or so ago, several collections in the UK held Tupaia glis, Tupaia tana and Tupaia minor - now the former is only kept in a few Russian collections, and the latter two are absent from Europe altogether.

Are the Tropical World animals not T. glis? They were listed as that when I went last year, and that's what I have them noted as?
