Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo News 2012

I'm hoping to visit mid-August so I've visted the website but the map of the zoo on the website is poor quality ( map - Paignton Zoo ), I wonder does anyone know where I can find an up-to-date pdf one?

Also, I see on the website ( Animal Information: Western Lowland Gorilla - Paignton Zoo ) that there are six Western lowland gorilla (Pertinax, Kumbuka, Kivu, Kiondo, N'dowe and Matadi) I was wondering which are male?

If anyone can help with either of these I would be very grateful.
Might be your first chance to view ZSL's new male, Kumbuka.. ;)

All the gorillas are male as Paignton hold a bachelor group.

Ha, ha I was hoping by eliminating the females that I would remember which male (who's name I think began with a 'K') I had heard was coming to London.

I think he might have moved by then as they said August but it would be nice.

Zebra foal born yesterday (16/7/12), signs up and enclosure stand-off area simply and effectively extended by placement of benches.

Brilliant news Shorts thanks.

So two foals in a year for Paignton, good news. Breeding in the UK seems to have gone up ever since Blackpool's male 'Tebogo' (Tobogo sp?). Hopefully this one will be a female so Paignton will have 0.3 when they move out their young male 'Zac' in a few years time and bring in a new stallion.

They need another sign explaining that 4 month old Zac is not the new born foal, as many people are assuming

Absolutely, that was my first thought:o until my wife pointed out the foal was way too big and I noticed it was munching hay rather than lying down weakly and suckling milk. My worst zoo error since I thought a Flamingo only had one leg (many moons ago).

The Paignton Zoo Inventory for 2011 reports unsuccessful births of maned wolf (2) , cheetah (3) and Sumatran tiger (3) , as well as the 4 Asian lions . A pileated gibbon was born but both it and the female unfortunately died .

On a more positive note thee following birds were reared - 1 marabou , 8 Chilean flamingo , 3 southern screamer , 3 great argus pheasant , 1 red-crowned crane , 2 toco toucan and 2 hooded pitta , amongst many others .

Excellent news. Especially after everything last year. Will need to make a trip out then, especially now the weather seems to be on the turn for the better.

Re the Pileated......That's such a shame - The two islands there, the other being for the Howler Monkeys (that have not bred - I think?) are such awesome exhibits in that you have to look so hard to see them, or know they're favourite branches to hang out on. Most people just walk on by but they must be the luckiest captive primates in the UK!

Some notes from a visit yesterday:

The new Coati enclosure is looking impressive.
The ponds between the Tenrecs and the Amphibian Ark are really stunning and Sand Lizards are arriving soon for an outdoor open-top exhibit.
The Barbary Sheep look like they are a herd of four (?) and they were all active on different ledges and looked superb.
The Ring Tails were teasing the now enclosed Red-Ruffed Lemurs - hope it is not stressful for them! [how come other collections can successfully mix Lemur species but Paignton can't?]
The Desert House has been planted extensively and looks great but needs a small Mammal species (Ground Squirrel?) to compliment the Guinea Pigs.
The Squirrel and Spider Monkeys are soon to be mixed.
A Mouse Deer now resides with the Prevost Squirrels.

* The Otters at LC are now in at the 'Rapids' and the enclosure looks great even before it has matured, but only the younger female is venturing out, her Mother is still too shy.

Lion cubs and zebra foal

I saw the lion cubs taking their first steps outside in front of the Press this morning. They didn't stray far from Indu and the house while I was there, and look just like the photo here:

They share the aaaaaah factor with the new zebra foal. My money is on it being female. If s/he can't be named after dad, Blesk, in some way, how about 'Olympia'? Or maybe that's lined up for one of the cubs!

Glad to see they are doing well. Thinking about giving it a couple of weeks before we pop over and see the little bundles. Let the mad crowds from the school holidays to die down.
