Something of a baby boom happening this month... Another new birth, this time at Zurich on 12th July to "Mamitu". Baby is so far unsexed

Although it says before this birth 'Rebecca' had two previous miscarriages by Viatu, she has previously been Frankfurt's most successful and experienced breeding female in recent years, with 7 offspring to her name, all sired by the previous silveback 'Matz'. One of them is the male 'Damisi' at Chessington,UK. and another is silverback 'Akili' at Artis Zoo in Holland.

Indeed, Rebecca is a highly experienced mother, and so far the baby and herself are doing well. I don't know about Damisi, but Akili has served as a role model silverback so far, being both a good leader and very gentle with his children; he likes to play a lot with his sons. Sometimes, however, he "steals" a baby - causing huge excitement and loud shouting of course - but does give it back to their mother after a while. ;)

Moves.

'Kesho' (Dublin born, Lena x Horst/Harry) has moved to Longleat from London to be apart of a bachelor group consisting of 'Kesho' his two younger brothers 'Alf' and 'Sekondi' (From Dublin, Lena x Horst/Harry). The other move is also to Longleat 'Boulas (Ex PL) and moved from Twycross.

Damisi is a good leader/father at Chessington- he has two offspring(males) by two females and could have more if they would stop contracepting them.

Akili is the only male I have seen photos of actually carrying his offspring on his back etc. He obviously has strong parental instinct.

Male "Gorgo" (born at Krefeld, 28.06.1981, "Massa" x "Boma") and female "Bebe Franc" (WILD born ~1978) were shipped from Leipzig to Rostock Zoo today to built a retirement group.

"Assumbo" (born at Jersey, 15.07.1973, unfertile, "Jambo" x "Nandy"), "Yene" (born at Port Lympne, 14.01.2001, "Djala" x "Foufou") and "Eyenga" (born at Zurich, 18.07.2004, "N'Gola" x "Nache") are going to establish a second group.

Kibali is setting in really well at Taronga and him and Kimya have become a nicely established pair for the time being.

Young male gorilla Tatu died accidentaly

Tatu - male gorilla living in Prague ZOO (born 30. 7. 2007) as a second baby to Kijivu and Richard.

According to the news he untangled rope in smaller room inside pavilion and wrapped it around his neck while playing. Tragically he hang himself.

Around 9:00 AM a keeper found Kamba, a gorilla nanny of the group, as she holds his lifeless body on the rope. Quick action took a place to separate other gorillas and resuscitation began. Unfortunatelly without a succes.

Similar thing happened at Howletts circa 1976/7 to the young female 'Kimba', their first female baby.:(

Well, the impact on a whole gorillas family in Prague is unknown yet, but obviously it´s a big tragedy for them. Little bit similar to the situation their first "baby" - Tatu´s older sister Moja - left to Cabraceno last year. Especially for silverback Richard it was a real shock, as well his reaction on Tatu´s death today was extreme.

Kamba, Tatu´s nanny will be very sad too. She lost her own only baby during a birth just a short time before Tatu was born to the group. As he was born, Kamba took care of his older sister Moja and later of Tatu himself, as his younger brother Kiburi was born. As Kiburi is still the youngest in family (born April 2009), Tatu was still connected to Kamba.

A loss like that is a big shock for the whole group. Many years ago at Jersey Zoo, the male infant Motaba got his head stuck in the ceiling bars of the indoor area. Amid the general panic of the group his mother 'Nandi' was frantically pulling down at her offspring and in danger of seriously hurting it, but the clever father 'Jambo' intervened-he supported the baby while sliding him along to a place where the bars were fractionally wider and his head could slip back through. So the baby was unhurt. I think Jambo deserved a medal for that-more so than for 'saving' the child that fell in the moat. ;)

Now that is an interesting story I had never heard that one before, about Jambo but some how it doesn't surprise me that he was clever enough to know that.

Its related in their keeper Richard J-Scott's excellent book about 'Jambo'. In true zoo fashion, this incident happened while Princess Anne was visiting the Zoo and just a few moments before she was due to come through the Gorilla House. The indoor enclosure had been made spic and span and decked out with browse etc to look good for HRH. But after this the enclosure looked like a tornado had been through and was spattered with diarrhoea from the panicked Gorillas. Maybe the royal visitor thought it always looked like that!:)

Will have to keep my eye open for that book it sounds as if,it will be an interesting read, even for a confirmed none Great Ape Fan like myself. That said Jambo is one gorilla I'm glad to be able to say I have had the pleasure,of having seen up close and personnal.

It's called 'Jambo- A Gorilla's Story'. I've always followed the development of that group but it contains quite a few other interesting anecdotes that I was unaware about until I read it.

Transfers- Drugged or awake?

I'm interested to know how the majority of Gorillas are transported between zoos nowadays. They used to always be 'knocked out' for travel but nowadays at least some are crate-trained without aneasthetic for their journey, to reduce the risks. But when Boulas went from Twycross to Longleat recently I think he was drugged. I don't know about the other three that have gone to Longleat.

Which practise is the more common?

I know that Kibali was drugged in order to get in his crate temporarily for just enough time to position him in the crate but otherwise his trip to Taronga was all wide awake.

Transfers - Drugged or Awake?

I saw a crate in the gorilla show den at Paignton a few days ago, so it looks as though Kumbuka is being crate trained for his move to London. His journey will be about 200 miles, 4 hours or so.

Damisi was crate trained. His move to Chessington was shown on TV and he appeared fully alert as the crate was loaded onto the van. There was even a comedy voice-over of him demanding the keys. His journey would have been similar.

Moving Gorillas

Between 2001-05 I transported 9 Gorillas in seperate journeys between European & Uk zoos. In all cases the animals were tranquilised for loading and were brought round before being driven off. In all cases they were unloaded from their crates direct into dens.
The furthest trip was Rome to Bristol with a pair. In most cases a keeper travelled with me in the cab, where we had cctv from the body.
We never had any problems with any Gorilla, although we scared the living day lights out of security personnel at Calais, who were required to inspect the van.

That is very interesting. Thanks for the information. So 'crate training' is to allow the animal familiarity with the crate for when it wakes up inside it before the start of its journey?

But why is it necessary to tranquilise the animal for loading if its already familiar with going into the crate?

So you brought Bongo and Romina all the way from Rome to Bristol?:)
