Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Beardsley Zoo News

AnaheimZoo- 2012 being the 90th anniversary is exciting enough, and it's amazing to learn how much new stuff, good and bad, goes on when you visit often! I might have more news later this week on the new exhibits.
Kifaru Bwana- Snow Leopards are my thoughts exactly! Rockwork, Asian endangered species; Snow Leopards were my first thought! However, there are other animals that might be considered, such as a bear species. Anyway, as long as the exhibit is good, I'm excited for these new animals!

Whoops! Anaheim, we must have been posting at the same time! I think it will be Snow Leopards, but possibly Red Pandas or a bear species. I doubt takin, as Roger Williams recently got them and they have bragging rights as the only takin in the Northeast.
I just noticed that it's been more than a year since I joined ZooChat! It's been a great 1st year and I look forward to more!

I now know what species are in the second room of the New World Tropics Building. In the free-flight aviary are Orinoco Geese, Ringed Teals, Keel-Billled Toucans, Scarlet Ibises, and a Silver-Lined Tanager. In the fenced in exhibit to the right are Golden-Lion Tamarins, Red-Footed Tortoises, and a Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth. And the large netted in exhibit opposite of the free-flight aviary has Goeldi's Monkeys and White-Bellied Caiques.
I learned that the female Black Howler Monkey named Zuele is likely the oldest howler monkey in the world at 26 years old.
Another potential species for Pampas Plains could be tapirs.:)
Now about the old bear exhibits; the reason they moved Joaquin out was not only because of the SSP program, but his exhibits were so old that there were safety issues regarding them. Renovating his exhibit is one of Beardsley's primary issues right now. Another worker told me that it might not be an Asian species though, and nothing is certain yet. They considered animals such as Red Pandas, Clouded Leopards, Black Bears, Cougars, and more, but nothing is certain yet, and it all depends on how much money they get for renovating his exhibit.

Okay, last bit of news for the week!
I feel bad for Cheyenne the Gray Wolf. She doesn't quite understand that Apache has passed, and she runs through her exhibit and looking for Apache.:(
Desmond the Andean Condor must be feeling pretty lonely. No one has been visiting him too much as the Giant Tortoises across from him are a hit. Luckily, I came over to give him some company, and got to admire how he's starting to look more mature, as his ruff is starting to come in, but it's not white yet.
The Chacoan Peccary piglet is practically identical to her parents now, and it can be almost impossible to tell her apart.
And I finally found out what's going in the old bear exhibits! A worker told me that she couldn't tell me, but when another worker said that it's okay to announce what animal it would be, she told me. But you have to guess!
Okay here's the hints;
Asian
Carnivore
Highly Endangered
Good luck! ;)

You know what, I'll just reveal the answer. The answer is (drumroll)...
Amur Leopard!
So finally we get another Asian species down here in Beardsley. The workers said they would try to use a fence that is easier to see through, and add naturalistic features. The overhaul of the bear exhibits could be completed by fall, depending on funding.
While we wait for autumn, let's read this interesting PDF. It has more interesting updates, such as;
The first phase of Pampas Plains
Reindeer are coming back!
A new female Chacoan Peccary coming
And more!
I also forgot to add that the American Toad in the Reptiles of CT building has been moved from his own terrarium to the Black Rat Snake/Turtle Exhibit.

That is FANTASTIC news! Thank you SO much, BeardsleyZooFan, for informing us! You are the best! Hopefully when they arrive I get to head down to Bridgeport and see them. Those leopards will be the first Amur leopards I've ever seen (haven't been to many zoos :o), so I sure am excited! I can't wait to see what the new exhibit'll look like! I'm also anticipating the Pampas Plains exhibit! Hope the exhibits look great. The Bronx isn't really up to anything new, so my next seven or so zoo visits may very well be to Beardsley! :D

Thanks! These are going to be my first Amurs too! Hopefully, the old bear exhibits can also be expanded a bit to make more room for the leopards. Renovations should hopefully be complete by fall or maybe extend into winter, and the cats can arrive winter/spring. Nothing is certain yet, but possibly one of the young leopards from San Diego will come here. I'm anticipating the first phase of Pampas Plains as well, and it might even be open next year! But you better get down to Beardsley soon, as the Giant Tortoises will leave soon!
I also have some news about a new addition to the zoo family, but I can't reveal it.:p Possibly there will be a public announcement in August, but the CT Post made an article about it a couple weeks ago. You'll have to do the researching yourself.:p

Glad your are getting Amur Leopards.
Nice one!
Yup, we finally get another Asian species, and the theme would work well with Amur Tigers close by! If only the bad Canada Lynx exhibit wasn't between them...
They said the overhaul might be completed by November at the earliest, so I'll guess the leopards will come in winter or spring. Then, we'll have an overall 6 species of cats, which I think is a lot for a small zoo.

It seems that when the White-Bellied Caiques and Keel-Billed Toucans switched exhibits, most of the caiques were sent away, so now there is only a male and female pair of them in the Goeldi's Monkey exhibit.
I don't think there is a Mata Mata Turtle in the caiman pool anymore, as I haven't seen it recently. However, there are 2 male Hispanola Sliders.

It's not likely, but a Golden-Lion Tamarin might have been born recently. Gosh I wish ISIS was still around...
I think the caiques can actually fit through the netting in the Goeldi's Monkey exhibit, so the caiques can actually travel from the monkey exhibit to the free-flight aviary. I think this because I know I've seen caiques in the monkey exhibit, but I have a recent photo of a caique in the free-flight aviary.

It seems the Pronghorn calf has went on exhibit!:)
I'm going to try to make a visit to Beardsley before August ends, along with Maritime Aquarium.

Rainforest Reptiles, a show featuring (you guessed it... Reptiles!) can be seen every Monday of August.
I don't think a GLT was born.
I plan to visit soon to see the Pronghorn baby and progress on the new exhibits.

I just found another reason to visit Beardsley before summer ends! The white alligator in Rainforest Reptiles is actually on exhibit when not in the show! Although I've heard the exhibit is bad, and nearby Maritime's is better.
Oh, and the tortoises leave on Labor Day!:(
