Changes You Would Make to Your Zoo

Buffalo Zoo:

* Get rid of the elephant exhibit to make more room for the new Arctic exhibit. I am torn about destroying the elephant house though. Since it's near the new entrance, maybe it could be converted to a restaurant or gift shop. If not, I would want them to at least preserve the elephant head sculpture on the the top of the building.
* Start building an outdoor exhibit for the gorillas. For more space, perhaps they could take over the space of the playground as well.
* I love the one horned rhinos, but I would like the zoo to be a bit more sectioned off geographically. So maybe replace them with white or black rhinos or add another species to their paddocks.
* Add grass to the zebra exhibit.
* Spruce up the ecostation exhibits to make them more interesting. Perhaps adding a new animal or two.
* Find a mate for the tamandua and make them a part of the zoo's SSP program.

Seneca Park Zoo:

* Destroy or modify the main building. Let the area be the focus for the primates and apes and give them better outdoor exhibits.
* Get rid of the old cages near the tiger exhibit. They are outdated. Perhaps that space can be used to move and and make an exhibit for the snow leopards.
* Find a way to incorporate the white rhinos in A Step Into Africa.

Well, I used to live close to the Oregon Zoo, so here it goes.

Bring back the wolveS: The wolves are going to be moved out to make way for part of the huge elephant exhibit. Giving the elephants space is nice, but the zoo needs to have wolves to attempt to educate the public about a returning top predator to Oregon.

Add a wolverine to the great northwest area...mostly because wolverines are awesome and they are also being found in Oregon again.

Turn the pathway that used to hold dinos during summer times into a small Asian mammal area. It's right next to the Asian elephant exhibit.

Revamp the big cat area. The tiger area is that old style grotto area and looks kinda ugly, especially when the tigers go to pace down in the ditch. The Amur leopard area is a bit on the small side but doesn't look horrible. There is vertical space and not a bad place to hold retired leopards.

Keep the pacific shores area! I know it's one of the biggest water users, and houses the most expensive animal to feed (sea otters) but the zoo does have that Great North West exhibit which explores mountains to coast along the path. Having a zoo close to the coast would be nice to temporarily house sea otters. I know California does quite a bit of that since the aquarium is right there, but I'd like to see Oregon do that as well.

Keep lorikeets. Getting up close and personal with animals is a huge boost to visitors and I hope it makes them feel more connected with them. The birds are quite the characters too and I think it's a much better fundraiser than that silly virtual roller coaster thingy right next to the exhibit. It's a zoo, not an amusement park.

Re-think Africa: The pacific northwest is VERY wet and most of the African animals need to be put inside because it's so cold, and the giraffe needs to be inside because the yard gets muddy and they don't want the giraffe slipping and falling.

Get the wild dog situation figured out: Last I heard there are three brothers and one female. The female cannot be with the males because the zoo does not own the brothers. They are now privately owned and the owner will not give the okay for them to breed. Either give the female to another zoo so she doesn't have to be by herself or send the three brothers somewhere and obtain new dogs.

Split the caracal exhibit and get another cat: Ever since the kittens have moved I haven't seen a caracal on exhibit. I admit they could be on exhibit and just hiding in the long grass or they could be in the holding area. When I went on a first look at the exhibit I thought I over heard that the exhibit could be split into two.

Start a hornbill family: The birds live in family groups and Tracy aviary is the only area I've seen that has such a group. They are in the giraffe area and there is quite a bit of room for there to be more hornbills. No idea if they are related or not. Saw some courtship behavior and an attempt at mating

Where are the birds? I thought I remembered something in the ZooTracks saying that they were going to build a better bird collection. I think I've seen more birds leave then come into the zoo. Having a walk through Asia aviary and another African aviary would be awesome. And more vultures because vultures are awesome.

Celebrate more days: I swear I attended more 'National -insert animal- Day' a few years ago. Now it's just a few donor events or events that don't really have anything to do directly with animals. Funds may go towards the critters though. I miss the lectures and celebrating sea otter, wolf and I don't think there has been an elephant day, and that's what they're supposed to be known for.

And of course the primate area needs a revamp, mostly the indoor areas the red-ape reserve section has the right idea about indoor and outdoor areas.

I think that's about everything for Oregon Zoo

Okay, a couple of things here;
For Point Defiance:
Does anyone know if dolphins or belugas are compatible to house with seals? I have a feeling that something will go wrong.
How are Przewalski's Wild Horses in the natural range of Asian Elephants?
Isn't Asian Forest Sanctuary based on southeast Asia? Therefore, Striped Hyenas and Red Pandas wouldn't make sense?
How are Georgia Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, and the Wilds anywhere close to you?

1. Belugas were in that Habitat with the Seals before they left.
2. I just want to see both species at the same time.
3. Their Native to Asia.
4. I just wanted to get ideas for those Facilities.

Well forgive me for my mistake on number 1, and I appreciate your ideas for the Wilds, Central Park, and Georgia. I just thought they were a little far from you.:p
For the elephants/horse matter, I've heard that the elephants there are very crabby, and perhaps a new species isn't the best idea. The zoo has phased out elephants anyways, and their exhibit will become an Indian Rhino exhibit. Can Animal Avenue house Przewalski;s Horses, as that area seems to not have any geographic theming.
And for Wild Asia Sanctuary, hyenas and Red Pandas aren't native to rainforests, or southern Asia, so they don't fit in with the otherwise great theming there.

My Zoo is London Zoo and I would try and diversify the collection and reintroduce the slogan "Every living thing is our concern". I would try and co-operate with Port Lympne and Howletts Zoos and accept that it is a waste of money spending millions on new exhibits for gorillas and tigers when Aspinall's zoos have had far more success with these species. Hopefully, there would be a reciprocal arrangement so that visitors to London Zoo could get discounts at other zoos and vice versa.

I would take a look at the collections and not have the same species at London and Whipsnade. This would free up more space for new species at both zoos. I would liaise with Plzen Zoo and look at ways of increasing the number of species kept at London Zoo, without putting any in cramped enclosures. In 1960, London Zoo had about 240 species of mammals, but now has about 75. In 1990, Plzen Zoo had about 50 species of mammals, but now has 245. As more species are facing extinction, I know which direction zoos should be going to save more species and it isn't going to do much by having hundreds or thousands of individuals of ABC species that will never be released into the wild.

I would also improve the way information is displayed around the zoo. This would involve audio-visual displays, computers, museum specimens etc. I would hope that this would interest visitors in the animals and encourage them to learn more, rather than just looking for an animal in an enclosure and then moving to the next exhibit.

I would also have a computer and printer in the information kiosk, so that customers could pay for print outs of their favourite animals. Also, I would revert to the time when there seemed to be a postcard of every mammal and bird at London Zoo. ZSL has a large collection of slides, photos etc and if some of this were digitised, there could be a print-on-demand facility at the gift shop. I've often wondered why zoos don't emphasise their unique species when it comes to gift shops. On my first visit to Chester Zoo, there seemed to be a varity of postcards, but none of a tuatara, despite the fact that Chester was (and still is) the only zoo on the British mainland to have tuataras.

I'll try and think of some other ideas.

Here's my final draft of what to do in Beardsley;
Allow White-Faced Sakis into the outdoor Black Howler exhibit.
Demolish Turkey Vulture, Barred Owl, Great Horned Owl, Gray Fox, and Canada Lynx exhibits.
Move Canada Lynx into former Andean Bear exhibits and make necessary changes to exhibit.
Build a new exhibit for Gray Foxes in New England Farmyard.
Move Greater Rheas temporarily into Llama exhibit until their new enclosure is ready in Pampas Plains.
Remove fence that seperated Dexter Cattle from rheas to expand the Dexter Cattle exhibit.
Include these areas in a new South American Adventure exhibit in 4 phases.
Pampas Plains, which will have the existing enclosures for Maned Wolves and Chacoan Peccaries, and new exhibits for Giant Anteaters and the Greater Rheas.
Andes Adventure, which will have Andean Bears, and Mountain Tapirs, and a new exhibit for Andean Condors.
Jaguar Walk, which will have a new outdoor exhibit for the Brazilian Ocelots, Capybara, Black-Handed Spider Monkeys, and Jaguars.
And a renovation of the South American Rainforest building.
Build an Asian Plateau exhibit with Red Pandas, White-Naped Cranes, Blue-Eared Pheasants, Snow Leopards, Sun Bears, and Amur Tigers.
Demolish the whole Predators area and make one huge exhibit for Canada Lynx.

Mystic Aquarium:
Begin introductions between Kodiak the lone male Steller Sea Lion and the rest of the sea lions.
Once Kodiak and the rest of the sea lions are completely comfortable with each other, tear down the rock wall that seperates the two Steller Sea Lion exhibits to make a larger Steller Sea Lion exhibit. Then introduce the female 2 California Sea Lions into the Steller Sea Lion exhibit.
Bring back bats into Hidden Amazon.
Make a new Sea Otter exhibit in Pacific Northwest.
Make a new exhibit that brings back Bottlenose Dolphins and possibly bring back dolphin shows.
Roger Williams Park Zoo:
Remove the Patagonian Cavy exhibit and use it to expand and renovate the Humboldt Penguin exhibit.
Renovate the Harbor Seal exhibit.
Renovate the mini rainforest building in Tropical America.
Move the West African Crowned Cranes into the Masai Giraffe exhibit and expand the crane exhibit to make a new Patas Monkey/baboon exhibit.
Move the Reeve's Muntjacs in North America to the Red-Crowned Crane exhibit in Marco Polo Trek, and put Arctic Foxes into the muntjac exhibit.
Renovate the Red Wolf exhibit as it is a bit small and and has awful viewing.
Move the Radiated Tortoises into Fabric of Africa from Australasia.
Add audio systems in Marco Polo Trek in the area where you're supposed to feel like you're in Venice and when you're on Marco Polo's ship.
Expand the bison exhibit to include the Pronghorn and add Moose to the former Pronghorn exhibit and make necessary adjustments.
Add lorikeets to the walk-thru aviary in Australasia and add feeding oppurtunities.
Add Amur Tigers to Marco Polo Trek.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay:

Renovate the Asian elephant exhibit and replace its elephants with either dromedary camels or black rhinos.
Renovate the 65-acre-Serengeti Plain enclosure to add eliminate train rides and add more paths and new animal species including African elephants, warthogs, okapi, African wild dogs, and red river hogs.
Move the Ankole cattle from their exhibit by the Sky-Ride to the Serengeti Plain enclosure.
Move the sable antelopes from their off-exhibit enclosure to the Serengeti Plain enclosure.
Move the aardvark from Jambo Junction to the Serengeti Plain enclosure.
Demolish the aging Stanly Falls Flume Ride and Tanganyika Tidal Wave, and replace them with the expansion of Jungala, with new exhibits for sun bears, siamangs, Malayan tapirs, lowland anoas, Visayan warty pigs, Indian crested porcupines, an aviary with Southeast Asian birds, Asian small-clawed otters from Jambo Junction, a Komodo dragon from Sesame Street Safari of Fun, and the return of gharials since 2010.
Add Grand Cayman blue iguanas to the Komodo dragon's former habitat in Sesame Street Safari of Fun.
Add a new koala exhibit near the Walkabout Way kangaroo exhibit.

Adventure Aquarium:

Renovate and expand Penguin Island and Seal Shores.
Add new Arctic Encounter building for polar bears, walruses, beluga whales, and sea otters.

Long Island Aquarium:

Drop admission prices to $20.

New England Aquarium:

Expand the outdoor harbor seal exhibit.
Renovate the Marine Mammal Center with underwater viewing.
Build an east wing building which contains an 800,000 gallon Gulf of Maine exhibit, a 250,000 gallon West Rocky Shore exhibit and a 30,000 gallon puffin exhibit, as well as multiple smaller exhibits range from 500 gallons to 1,500 gallons.

Zoo Miami:

Add gharials to the Wings of Asia aviary.
Replace gaurs with common hippos and renovate the gaur exhibit to include underwater viewing for hippos.
Add Brazilian tapirs to the Cloud Forest area of Amazon & Beyond.
Move Andean condors from the African wing to Amazon & Beyond.
Renovate the current Andean condor exhibit to include mandrills and colobus monkeys.
Replace gerenuks with the return of bongos and yellow-backed duikers.
Expand the Australia wing to include a much larger exhibit for red kangaroos and emus.
Renovate the current emu exhibit to include a cassowary.
Add another one to go with a single cassowary.
Add blackbucks to the nilgai exhibit.
Move the dama gazelles to the addax exhibit.
Move the saddle-billed storks to the current gerenuk exhibit.
Move the marabou storks and gerenuks to the current greater kudu/thompson gazelle/black crowned crane exhibit.
Add a new male African elephant in the African elephant exhibit.
Renovate the pygmy hippopotamus exhibit and replace pygmy hippos with Nile crocodiles.

Move the reptiles (except for the alligator snapping turte) from the Florida reptile building to some place else.
Build a new free-flight aviary and exhibits for spectacled bears, giant otters, and American crocodiles, plus new ones for macaws, ocelot, parrots, marmosets, howler monkeys, etc., for the long-awaited next phase of Tropics of America.
Add a new Florida panther or red fox to the former Florida panther exhibit.
Remove the African crowned crane from the deer yard.
Move the scarlet ibises from the roseate spoonbill exhibit to the Tropics of America.
Remove the sacred ibises from the roseate spoonbill exhibit.
Renovate the Australian exhibit, move the emus in with the kangaroos, and replace them with cassowaries.

I like your ideas. it may indeed be a stretch to build a gorilla exhibit on the bear line. I didn't think of that back gravel lot when i read this thread. I haven't been back there since they built the new main lot. I assumed they were using it for a staff lot of something. If not, it's a decent sized piece of land for a new complex.

As for an aquarium expansion, I'd be hesitant since there's already a true aquarium right across the river in Newport. I have good memories of the old Fleischmann Aquarium, but back then the Newport Aquarium wasn't around. I'd rather the zoo focus on things other than fish.

Well they do focus on crocodilians, frogs, otters, lorikeets, snakes, turtles, and penguins also.

I think Okapi and Red River Hogs would be better off in Myombe Reserve than Serengeti Plain.
Aardvarks in 65 acres of replica savannah? Don't you think it would be hard to find them?:p
That's quite a list for Jungala! There are already otters there in Jungala. Plus, I wouldn't include siamangs, warty pigs, tapirs, or anoas as nearby Lowry Park has those. However, I'd include all those other animals you mentioned, and make a new better elephant exhibit in Jungala.

Maryland Zoo:

* Attain snowy owls again or another small Arctic animal to go in the empty exhibit.
* All of the exhibits in Polar Bear Watch could be expanded for the well being of the inhabitants.
* Complete the renovation to the buggy so it can be open for the prime season.

* Add more animals to Maryland Wilderness!
* Change out the box turtle with a more visible and interesting animal since there are pop up bubbles. I was thinking moving the prairie dogs here, but I don't think they are a Maryland native.

* Fill in empty exhibits in African Journey. The old hippo exhibit is a prime example since it's one of the first things you see when you enter the area. Pygmy hippos or something of that size would be suitable. Acquire another chamelon for that exhibit or take down the exhibit all together.
* I wouldn't mind seeing a few more bird species in the aviary.
* Spruce up the okapi exhibit and start allowing them to be in the same area.
* Start allowing the giraffes to share the same area or rotate them so the female can be in the big yard sometimes (perhaps this is done already).
* Expand the elephant exhibit. I would prefer if they sent away their male elephant. I hate seeing him in that small yard doing the same stereotypical behaviors.
* Update the penguin exhibit (this is in the works).
* Get the ventilation problem fix in the Panamanian frog exhibit so they can be back on display.
* I wouldn't mind seeing hay or soft substrate in the primate/ape exhibits.

* Use unused space more. Start doing something with the old paddocks and main lane so the front can combine with the back. But perhaps they want to preserve this part of history. If so keep it open to the public with signs talking about their past.

Updated list for Beardsley (sorry for all these updates):o
Keep Gray fox exhibit.
Ship out Canada Lynx when Roger Williams is ready to house lynx.
Do a complete overhaul of the old bear exhibits; expand the exhibit, knock down old holding and fencing and add glass viewing and mesh netting for Amur Leopards (forget Snow Leopards)
Add Blue-Eared Pheasants to former lynx exhibit.
Do an overhaul of the old tiger exhibits. Expand the exhibits and add glass viewing and make it an exhibit for Sloth Bears.
Use area behind the cafe to add Red Panda and White-Naped Cranes. Also use this area to make a new absolutely amazing Amur Tiger exhibit.
Renovate the Bug House and Reptile House.
With some adjustments, put perhaps Patagonian Cavies in the Giant Tortoise exhibit once the tortoises leave, and expand the exhibit a bit.
Once the Domestic Cat passes in the New England Farmyard, renovate the exhibit a bit and put in a Virginia Opossum.
Get rid of the walk-thru aviary in Alligator Alley as it is too small and can get crowded. Send the Cattle Egret and Fulvous Whistling Ducks into the rainforest building, and ship out the rest of the birds.
Add Common Squirrel Monkeys and a Southern Tamandua to the Goeldi's Monkey exhibit.
Expand the Common Vampire Bat and Pygmy Marmoset exhibits in the rainforest building.

Have you even seen Dowtown Aquarium Denver? It seems you're just pointing out the stuff that snowleopard doesn't like on his roadtrips and practically repeating what he says...
And I don't quite think sun bears or clouded leopards would be a good fit for the tiger exhibit...

Oglebay Good Zoo

*Create a African Forest paddock in the clump of unused space near the barn.

*Split the paddock into two halves. One half contains a group of red river hogs and a troop of colobus monkeys in the trees above. The other half contains okapis, bongos, zebra duikers, and black duikers.

*Build the planned African Aviary next to the paddock.

*Build an outdoor komodo dragon exhibit somewhere in the zoo. Use the current dragon enclosure for our off-exhibit bats.

*Build an Australian Wildlife Building similar to the Cleveland Zoo's Gum Tree Outpost, featuring numbats, wombats, koalas, and tree kangaroos in a mixed indoor enclosure.

* Put together a simple yet size-adequate mesh exhibit featuring Black Rufous Elephant Shrews on the wildlife trail near the lemurs, tortoises, and ocelot.

I'm sure fishing cats would be a good fit for a tiger exhibit.

I'm sure fishing cats would be a good fit for a tiger exhibit.

That's why I didn't mention Fishing Cats as bad choices for the exhibit, as Sun Bears would be just as cramped in that exhibit, and possibly leopards too, especially since the exhibit is designed for animals that like the water, which Clouded Leopards don't. So Fishing Cats would be nice, but an outdoor area would be appreciated, something Toyota Elephant Passage at the nearby Denver Zoo didn't do.
