Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2012 #2

. Lets face it twycross don't have the funds for a budongo,ROTRA or gorilla kingdom.

You are probably right but I think they could build a spacious and functional enclosure(s) for the Chimps for a lot less than the aforementioned Zoos. Monkeyworld and Dudley are two examples of what can be achieved on lower budgets.

I agree entirely, spacious & functional is preferable to me, which is what i was implying earlier for Kuno.

Great Ape design plans available?
Again: timeframe for Kuno available?

From the 2012 Twycross guide book, "Our plans for creating a new chimpanzee enviroment. Chimp Choices and Consequences, are progressing. We are currently developing the plans internally and discussing with architects and have started applying for funding, This development will include large, natural, outdoor areas with tall indoor areas which will promote natural behaviours in this social species. The animal work has already begun with the integration of our chimps into larger groups in preparation for moving into the first phase of the complex" It also states that , along with Kuno, "These are just two of the exciting developments happening at Twycross Zoo over the coming months and years"

Tres interessant. Its almost as if the writers of the book were reading the forum on here and felt they had better let the current state of play regardign these two exhibits known! So this is first confirmation that both these two projects have not been shelved (yet).

Can anyone enlighten me as to the current chimp groups at twycross? how many groups do they have an is their any potential for them to be merged into one or two groups?

Yes, it does, very much.:D

If these plans come to fruition, good for Twycross is what I say, but I'm still looking forward to the reality rather than just 'plans'.;)

Re the current Chimp situation, I believe there are currently three groups in three houses;

1. The oldest Gorilla building behind Mansion.

2. The 'chimpanzee colony' building in the S.W(?) part of the Zoo.

3. The recently vacated 2nd Gorilla house adjacent the Elephants.

There may or may not be any chimpanzees left in the Green Mile cages- no-one on here has confirmed either way yet.

I would doubt its possible to mix any of the current groups any further together due to the size of the existing buildings. Hopefully the planned new build will change that.

If I remember correctly the chimps that were in the original gorilla enclosure are the ones who moved into the gorilla house by the Eles. I'm pretty sure they now have two main groups, gorilla house and the colony house along with a trio and possibly a pair in green mile.

That's how it was on my last visit (early July) anyway.

oh, right. So is the original Gorilla House empty now? I don't quite understand the rationale behind that move.

Yes, I think so. I seem to remember it is to be demolished along with green mile, but perhaps I'm wrong.

Mmmmm, all these directions and pointers to building here and there remain rather confusing. Tell tale signs though that the chimps are being moved into 2+ groups. As I understand it ..., the gorilla will be one family group + and a geriatric loner (?).

Still - like Pertinax - I would love to see those plans for Chimp Kingdom .. and Kuno (talk ain't everything you see ..).

No, there is only 1 gorilla group now. Oumbie, asante, ozala and biddy now all live together an reportedly hav settled in well as a 4some. Boulas was moved to longleats new bachelor group about 2 months ago, although I don't think he has bin integrated with the other 3 males yet.

So if the green mile and adjacent old gorilla house are on the site of the new chimp complex, and the old now demolished monkey house is too (as the latest map suggests), then the pets corner is likely in the way, as would be at least part of the penguin bit. Does anyone know if the new penguin exhibit is in the same place as the old one or has it migrated north slightly to allow space for future chimp enclosures?

Chimp situation as per my visit last week (sorry thought I'd already posted this):

Chimp Complex: Kip, William, Peter, Samantha, Jolie and Holly plus Danny and Tommy currently being mixed.

Vacated gorilla house (opposite gorilla group): Jambo, Flynn, Jomar, Charlotte, Tojo, Victoria, Josie and Genet.

Old Gorilla house behind the Green Mile: Ricky, Louis and Choppers. I also think that Noddy, Coco and Mongo are in there too, but I'm not 100% sure.

Green mile: Benji, Tuli and Rosie.

I'm going again monday so I'll double check the Green Mile situation.

chimps

mazfc-many thanks for complete update and breakdown of individuals- who is where. So there are still three groups in the three buildings, and at least one bit of the green mile is still in use. And despite recent deaths of some oldies, they still have 25 chimpanzees!

As I said above, I think these groups will stay largely as they are until a new complex is built as they haven't got any space to try more integration, apart from presumably the last 'green milers'.

See above for breakdown of current chimpanzee groupings- there are three main groups still.

Gorillas- one 'family' group now of 1.3 animals. Though the female 'Biddy' is their oldest now, she is very normal and has integrated very easily into the group of 1.2 which includes her own daughter Ozala( they've lived in seperate groups since Ozala was removed from her mother aged 7 years). The third female 'Asante' is the handraised one about which quite a lot is written on here due to her problems in the group.

The current map shows something which I think(?) says 'Chimpanzee attraction' on the central lawn area. On the map it doesn't encompass the area of the oldest Gorilla house(behind the mansion) or the old pet's corner, although that is where I believe it was originally to be sited. Maybe those plans- or the location at least- has been changed. It will need to be fairy spacious to accomodate all those chimps but even so I don't expect it will cover as much ground as maybe some on here hope for.;)

My guess would be that after this is finally built, the oldest gorilla house might be earmarked for demolition as after the Green Mile, that is the probably the next ugliest/most outdated building and of the sort that invokes criticism. I don't know what they might have planned for the other two redundant 'chimpanzee houses' -put smaller primates in them perhaps?

Theres a poster on the window in Jambo's house showing the planned chimp moves, I'll try to remember to get a pic of it on Monday.

I wonder what they have planned for Benji, Tuli and Rosie, who are still in the green mile house, one part of Joe's gorilla house perhaps, where they will continue to live as a trio, or integrated into one of the larger groups? Also are Danny and Tommy now integrated with others in the Chimp Complex or are they still separated?

If that half of that House is still empty, that would seem the obvious place for them to go. The mesh 'window'(if still there) would allow contact with the ones next door also, for possibly, integration later on.

I think virtually any/all of these Chimpanzees, apart from any that have real behavioural problems, can probably be mixed with others given time and care.
