Okapi's

Currently there are 26.23 in Europe,
No, this is an old data list, i suppose you have this from ISIS.
Currently the numbers are : 28.26 (in 17 european Zoo's)

And Toddy is right,
Berlin Zoo have 3.2 ; Sandoa, Stomp, Bosi and the lady's Jemima and Batouri.

Thanks black-star. I knew the figures were only rough as ISIS is not up to date and there have been births/deaths recently. Also I forgot about Berlin. The sexes look pretty balanced in Europe so is what Toddy says about female shortage true?

The european okapi population is hardly growing and not doing that well at all, there are still many deaths of young animals. To archieve the desired opulation growth, births of females are more important then males because one male can serve as breeding male for more then one female... at the moment, some zoos have just males and are waiting for females, Leipzig and Beauval for example. Other zoos have just one female and could take more (Cologne).

Copenhagen Zoo has also been waiting for a new female for a long time. At first we wanted an experienced breeding male, since female didn't let the young male mate with her. But since we coulden't get one, we decided to send our 11 year old female to Rotterdam, so that her genes would not go wasted.

At the moment our okapi enclosure serves as a holding facility for surplus young males that can be used in the breeding programme in the future.

That is not entirely correct.

Banguru specially came in 1996 for Camilla, Nero was also present.
She has rejected both men.
Then came the man Kamba, this marriage was also unsuccessful.

So, Camilla rejected 3 men.

for the record;
Camilla; born in 1994.

Nero; born in 1986, sinds 1987 in Copehagen, died there in 2002.
Banguru; born in 1994, sinds 1996 in Copenhagen, died there in 2006.
Kamba; born in 1999, sinds 2003 in Copenhagen, still there.

Any developments regarding Camilla's progress at our local Blijdorp Zoo and how well she is accepting the resident breeding male? Breeding hopes ..... outlook???

Don't ask :(;) .

There is still no marriage between the two, but she is tolerate him in her enclosure.
This is what i see, not the keeper, next time i will ask them if i see one.

Thanks for that info black-star :)

The theory here at Copenhagen was that she would need a male much more experienced in breeding to "set her straight". That's why we decided to send her to Blijdorp, where you guys have the best ;)

Neither Banguru nor Kamba could have had any breeding experience when they came to Copenhagen, since they are too young. I'm not sure about Nero though...

For the moment, Kamba lives with another young male from Marwell, and there was talk of getting another young male.

Camilla accepts Tom and they have mated (last time a year ago) now they are just friends. Don't know if she is pregnant, doesn't look like it.
She did fell in love with our younger male Dayo, but he was sent away to Beauval. Are you one of the old keepers of Camilla Toddy?

Still to go for this year:

Dumela: Marwell, summer 2008 (if this is still correct)

They told me they aren't sure if she is still pregnant or not- she definately tested pregnant originally but is now just about over the gestation time since her last mating so they are very concerned.

Keeper say the same thing as i did (she is tolerate him in her enclosure, nothing more than that.)
And no, Camilla in not pregnant.

So it seems like rejected male number 4.:(

No, Kamba lives with Stanley, he came from Stuttgart (on 27-02-2008).

Stanley; born on 23-01-2007 Stuttgart, parents are Xano + Epena.

I think she needs a young male. She likes them better then the old ones (can't blame her,Tom is not a pretty boy anymore ;) )

You are totally wrong there. She needs an experienced breeding male.

I suspect that the time is nigh that the EEP okapi management must seriously consider AI attempts with her in order to have any offspring from her. We have already lost the Wuppertal valuable female, no point in losing Camilla too (without any offspring by her).

Otherwise, I feel she is a no-no-no-no-no (I have another headache whenever I see one ... male)! :p

I can only tell from experience that she was in love with our younger male Dayo. They where all over eachother all the time. But they only had a few weeks together. But you are right..she should move to a other zoo, to try a new male (but i don't see this happen very soon)

No she doesn't mean Tom, i said she likes younger males more and she said i was wrong about that.
Noooooo Tom know's what he is doing :p
