Marwell Wildlife Marwell news 2012

Interesting move regarding Bela's final destination. Blair Drummond SP currently have 2.0 and one is hybrid. The pure bred male is 'Mischa' he is fourteen/fifteen and is Banham's ex male, also the father of Kuzma at Banham. I wonder if they'll try and breed from him and Bela. It would be like two single parents coming together with Kuzma's father and Sveta's mother becoming mates. I maybe wrong and they'll just be 'companions'.

As far as I know BDSP are acting as a retirement base on behalf of the EEP and will be assigned whatever is avalible and they have the space to house

Wouldn't be suprised if either Mischa or Gengis had died anyway.... not saying that's what's happend but neither are/were getting any younger

BDSP is performing quite a useful task in several EEP's like described above. BDSP is also starting to develop along a more ambitious course (moving away from the classical safari park set up).

I think that either Mischa or Genghis has actually died, the enclosure doesn't look big enough for 2.1 rotating. However, I haven't seen the enclosure yet so I won't pass judgement.

I received the summer edition of Marwell News this morning & after slating the previous edition, i have to say i feel slightly more upbeat about this one!
Main 'news' not sure if its been posted is the plans for ' a spectacular new walkthrough aviary to be opened early next year'. This will be sited at encounter village, it will contain several species, only ones named are waldrapp ibis.
Other current animal news such as hatching of 4 egyptian tortoises, birth of gentle lemur twins & passing of Yenna
the amur tiger have already been mentioned here.
Interesting article on their involvement in the Milgis Trust elephant project, although it means nothing, maybe elephants are a long term plan for the valley?!
The new aviary wouldn't be my priority & will probably only house existing species, but i hope it does include something new for once and at least it gives the impression the park isn't stagnating further!

Its a shame the walk through monkey enclosure never worked out, maybe they should have used Squirrell Monkeys like London Zoo?

I quite like the idea of a new aviary. I have always found the M.W. Zoo to be a bit lacking in the bird department. Certainly, lately the bird aviaries that were towards the back of the zoo did not do the zoo any justice.

40th anniversary and recent news

"i was pleasantly surprised by the history of Marwel exhibition in the hall, which included wall displays for every year(almost anyway) old posters & most issues of Marwell News from the start were on display to read."

Further to Pipaluk's comments, the display is on show along the Yew Walk (from the Hall back garden towards the Red Pandas). Also in the shelter at the end of the Yew Walk there is a display showing the concept, and some of likely occupants, of the proposed new walk-through aviary to be built at that site. The Black wildebeeste (or White-tailed gnu to the older readers!) have been moved to the former Roan enclosure and, yes, they do have access to the paddock.

This is excellent news! Thank you very much for posting, is Marwell's plan still to phase them out?:( It would be a shame as we'd only have two holders in the UK left, although Newquay's are a very good breeding pair.

I am so pleased to hear this news - it has been a long time coming!

Is the new calf pure Rothschild's or a hybrid ?

This one is a Hybrid (Hybrid mother and a pure father)

A pure Rothschild calf is due later in the year though (to Matilda)

Hopefully be one of the last hybrids born at Marwell

I visited Marwell today. These are my observations:

1) There is now only a male Southern ground hornbill and he has moved back to his old enclosure alongside the "Marabou Mansions" aviary
2) There are lots of new wooden platforms in the Amur leopard enclosures
3) The red-crowned cranes have moved into the enclosure previously used for the Southern ground hornbills, along the bird walk, and their previous enclosure alongside the nyalas is being refurbished
4) The old wildebeest enclosure is now empty whilst (as reported earlier) they finally have access to grass in the old roan antelope paddock
5) The douroucoulis have moved into the old saki monkey enclosure
6) The cotton-top tamarins have moved into the old golden lion tamarin enclosure, alongside the douroucoulis
7) The saki monkeys have moved into the old cotton-top tamarin enclosure
8) The posters advertising the planned walk-through aviary hint that the following birds will be housed in it - pied avocet, scarlet ibis, ringed teal, African spoonbill, waldrapp ibis, village weaver, blacksmith's plover, glossy starling and turaco
9) The old douroucouli enclosure is now empty
10) The wooden frame has been extended in the fossa enclosure

Births since my last update are as follows:

29/05/12 - Madagascan hissing beetle
02/06/12 - Green and black poison dart frog
12/06/12 - Saki monkey
08/07/12 - Scimitar-horned oryx
11/07/12 - Scimitar-horned oryx
17/07/12 - Scimitar-horned oryx
20/07/12 - 2 green and black poison dart frogs
21/07/12 - Green and black poison dart frog
21/07/12 - 3 black cheeked lovebirds
30/07/12 - Scimitar-horned oryx
02/08/12 - Scimitar-horned oryx
07/08/12 - Scimitar-horned oryx
17/08/12 - 1 female giraffe

The new Giraffe calf (a female, as noted by Mhale) has now been named "Olympia" following a vote on Marwell's website

I received the latest copy of Marwell News in the post yesterday and having slated previous editions, i was pleaaed to see this one contained a fair amount of current collection news e.g
- arrival of Milla, female Amur tiger from Zlin & that a new male will join her next year.
- new walkrhrough aviary to open at easter (2013 i assume even though it says 2012!)
-snow leopard cubs leaving soon, parents to be mixed again
-articles on gentle lemur twins, olympia the latest giraffe born and new Hartmanns zebra male Gunzo from Southern France amongst others.

Apart from the usual waste of about 8 pages advertising events when 2 would suffice, i thought it was good until the hammer blow on the last page! Apparently each copy sent to the members costs
£1, ( 3 times a year, out of their annual fee of £60!), so this will be the last printed edition sent to members! Great, it will be online in future, very eco-friendly i'm sure, but we don't all want to be online 24-7!!
Another Marwell (Wildlife haha!) own goal!

I know 'departures' aren't normally advertised like 'arrivals' but is there any news about anything leaving the collection in the near future- given I believe there now is some sort of policy to remove some of the non-endangered species?
