Behold the monkey: when good DIY art restoration intentions go bad

I think it looks better.

anyway....Woman who destroyed fresco 'had permission'

An elderly woman who destroyed a 19th century fresco in a Spanish church while trying to restore it has shifted blame to the church priest.

Pensioner Cecilia Gimenez, 81, came under fire for ruining the 120-year-old painting of Jesus Christ by Elias Garcia Martinez after covering it in a thick layer of paint.

Ms Giminez altered the painting so much that BBC Europe correspondent Christian Fraser described it as now resembling "a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic".

Appearing on Spanish television, Ms Giminez said the church's priest had authorised the repairs.

"We have always repaired everything ourselves here. The priest knew about it. Of course he did," she said, according to a BBC translation.

"How could I do something like that without permission? I did not do it in secret. Anybody who entered the church was able to see me painting."

Mr Martinez's granddaughter Teresa Garcia Blanc was scathing of the attempted restoration.

"They showed me what had been done to my grandfather's artwork and at first I laughed because I thought it was a joke," she said.

"It was bad enough she painted the tunic. But the problem got worse when she started on the face, because the painting is now completely destroyed."

Maybe it's the missing monkey from your parrot painting?

I can't stop laughing every time I see what she did to the painting. You have to wonder if she had cataracts or was so delusional that she just had no idea what she was doing.

it just reminds me of what Mr. Bean did to "Whistler's Mother":

Very Bean like.

This is one of the funniest things I have seen in a while, all that is missing is the :) face. The mouth is the best bit, looks like it was a bit too complex, so she decided to just smudge it.

Jesus fresco a drawcard after botched restoration - Yahoo!7 News
A horribly botched attempt to restore a 102-year-old fresco in Spain is proving to be quite a drawcard for tourists.

A well-meaning elderly woman made international headlines when she attempted to restore the painting of Jesus Christ in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church in the city of Zaragoza.

One critic described the end-result as a crayon sketch of a "very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic".

Church officials had pledged to try to fix the painting, but hundreds of visitors have since poured into the town to see the restoration for themselves.

Almost 18,000 people have also signed an online petition to halt the town's plan to return the painting to its pre-restoration glory.
