Remember stereograms?

Does anyone remember these from the 90's? Anyone too young to remember them will surely be amazed by the concept of 3D from 2D. :D

I stumbled across a few today on stereograms.org

Here are a couple below. The trick is to try to focus on your reflection on the screen, and a 3D image should pop out at you. If you are seeing these for the first time, they will blow your mind. If you have seen many before, you will still get that feeling of triumph when the 3D image appears.

Does anyone have any more to share?

Lord, I hated these things. I tried for years to be able to see the images to no avail. Still can't see them.

An elephant and a wolf.

Why are they in the photography forum? As they are computer generated images I think they should probably be in Zoo Cafe.

:p

I could'nt see them either while looking at the thumbnails but when I enlarged them they worked. You have to stare at the pic for 20 or so secs and then the elephant appears. Quite amazing really.

An elephant and a wolf is correct. I wonder if the bucket behind the elephant is for him to poo in?

Good point. I think that I mistakenly put it here because I was browsing this forum when I created the thread. I am happy for a mod to move it.

Yeah folks, it's easy! Just enlarge the images and try to look at the pic "cross eyed" or stare at the pic and then start to daydream so the focus of your eyes changes.

Easy, my elbow! The last time I was able to see one of these things was in 1992 before I had glasses. I'm now close to legally blind. You all are just making stuff up :)

Would you mind moving this thread to the Zoo Cafe please? Cheers.

Well, try this other pic from the same website.

I wear glasses now, and I took them off. Made it easier to see the images as your vision has to defocus on the image. If you take off your glasses you'll be defocused anyway.

Nanoboy, I thought it was a poo behind the elephant. They do very large squarish turds.

A blast from the past!

I could never see what was supposed to be hidden in these pictures back then and cannot now a days.

Can only some people see these things? - Is it genetic, ie tongue rolling?

Or is it a wind up between two people to see if anyone else is daft enough to pretend to see it?

No the images are indeed there. Hix's approach might work.

The last image, believe it or not, showed two chimps laughing at a third chimp that just slipped on a banana peel.

Have a look at this new one. It is extremely detailed, and shows one of the most famous scenes in history. It's a scene that maybe 2 billion+ people would be familiar with.

I can see them quite easily if I move my head closer than normal to the screen - using the largest version is essential. Mind you as a former Chemistry teacher, my eyes and brain are trained to translate 2D information into 3D. BTW the wolf's right eye looks so sad ;).

without glasses they appeared very blurry to me, but with my reading glasses on they were crystal clear.

My former A-level chemistry teacher had one real and one glass eye, wonder if that helps too?

People who don't have functioning binocular vision won't see them but it's probably mainly that it's hard to get the nack. I tend to look at something a bit behind the computer and move my eyes to the picture whilst still holding my gaze as though I'm looking through the computer at the more distant object eg the wall!

Well that's another thing wrong with me then!!

I am gong to stand by my original thoughts and believe you are all making it up and there is nothing really to see!!:p

If anyone can give us a detailed description of the last stereogram, I will post another soon.

That chimp had slipped on a banana? That makes sense - I thought it was breakdancing.

Last one was Christ on the cross.

Yes, Christ was on a cross, but there was so much more. The soldier was stabbing him with a spear, and there were the other guys on crosses next to him.
