Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2012 #3

Thanks!

Do you know where the Margay are held off show and do you know where they will go when back on show? I was told they would be next to the sun bears, I'm assuming where the Aarwolves are now?

Haven't the foggiest where they are held offshow, no. I've been told a number of sometimes contradictory things about when they would go onshow; initially the plan was to have had them onshow by now, in the old binturong enclosure on Carnivore Row - this is why the entry for margays was re-added to the stocklist on the zoo's website. However, when it became necessary for a new binturong male to arrive at the collection, and thus be kept in the old binturong enclosure whilst awaiting the departure of the old male, I'm given to understand these plans were put on hold.

However, if the margays are intended to be onshow in one of the small carnivore dens near the sunbears, this shouldn't have been a factor. There are three enclosures in this block which could in theory hold the margays - one holds a Tibetan Golden Cat, one the Aardwolves, and one the Dwarf Mongeese.

So to summarise, the above is a lot of information but nothing solid to answer your question ;) time will tell, really. Margays are a nice species, so they should be worth the wait.

I've heard (on a visit the other day) some of the previous plans have changed e.g. rockhoppers may not be going to sealion pool anymore, might be something new going there instead now, no hint as to what though.

Also the zoo's facebook has photos of a baby dwarf mongoose (from July I think it said).

Thanks for the info again, well at least the introductions have gone well according to the keeper I spoke to, do you know how long they have been at the collection for?

The male was born at the zoo in 2003, and I believe was onshow until late 2009 to early 2010. The female arrived at the zoo in June 2010, after the species went offshow.

New arrivals include Visayan Spotted Deer and Pygmy Slow Loris

Interesting - I knew about the deer, but the loris comes as a surprise! Did you observe these directly, or have you read about the arrivals somewhere?

A male Malayan tapir called "Mogli" has arrived, from where, i don't know, 0.0.3 Azara's agouti have been born and the chief exec has confirmed the wolverines will be moving onto HWP.

Confusion & Questions.

With all the recent updates, I've lost track and began to wonder what has happened to some species and individuals.

1. What happened to the male Malayan Tapir from Dortmund that arrived after the old male ('Ka') died?

2. Are the Loris a straight swap with ZSL London for Edinburgh's Bushbabies?

3. I've heard a new female Wolverine has arrived, is this true? If so, where from?

According to the CEO he has said the new males tapir has settled in well and can be seen sleeping under the trees with the two girls are for the Bushbabies i didnt know they were going to London was always told the might be going in the MF not sure about female Wolverine !!!

I think it is unlikely they have a new female Wolverine as I saw a pair in the rock den enclosures together. Unless they are planning to form another breeding pair, if so they would have to get their hands on another male?

Another escape situation in the zoo, this time involving a 600kg Heck bull which was on the loose for about 40 minutes, until zoo keepers and vets used tranquiliser darts and managed to restrain the animal.
An Edinburgh Zoo spokeswoman said: "An adult Heck cattle bull escaped from its enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo for 40 minutes.
"It stayed within the locality of the enclosure.
"Edinburgh Zoo visitors were immediately escorted to indoor areas in the zoo.
"Edinburgh Zoo's trained team of expert keepers and veterinarians safely and effectively darted the animal. Staff are establishing the circumstances of the escape, and have secured the area."

BBC News - Bull escapes from Edinburgh Zoo enclosure

I was sorry to hear that after being recaptured after its escape, the Heck bull was later destroyed at Edinburgh Zoo, this escape follows the escape of a Scarlet Ibis, the local squirrel population have been blamed for this, fortunately the bird has now been returned to the zoo, earlier this year there was a baboon escape at this zoo and also the escape of red river hogs, which no longer feature in the collection. Obviously, and quite rightly, in my opinion the zoo have now to explain these frequent escapes to the local council licensing department.

I think I read somewhere that the whole thing was around a dominance issue between two males that got out of hand. The one that had escaped had too severe internal injuries and so the zoo vets decided it was in the bull's best interests to PTS.

These things happen, unfortunately.
