Yes it was a fight between two males, he would have needed to be PTS even had he not got out as I think the main damage had already been done quite quickly. Sad, but always a risk where animals live in groups and generally a risk worth taking in my opinion.

The red river hogs didn't exactly escape from an enclosure, it was during being moved so not quite the same but it does look bad when the escapes are listed like that. What happened with the baboon, I must've missed that one?

The slow loris replace the luzon cloud rats in the magic forest, these have all died or moved on now and I was told its unlikely they'll be replaced, which I think is a shame.

Be sad to see him finally go, after much delay. That article did however tell me one thing I didn't know; I hadn't realised there had been any level of breeding between himself and the old female, even if it didn't end with a live birth. It bodes well for when he arrives in Poland - the two females there are a lot younger than Miranda was.
 
Was the female particularly old? The female at Twycross died (became ill and was euthanased) not so long after giving birth to a pup (which died). I cannot understand why this species does so badly in the UK when there appears to be no special requirements for its management that differ from californian sea lions, and given they breed well in Europe and elsewhere. Do the males hassle pregnant females to mate? Do other facilities separate the cows and provide specific breeding areas? I

I believe she was something like 18 or 19 years old, whilst Sofus has just turned 7.
 
Will be interesting to see what happens to the enclosure if the Rockhopper idea has been thrown out the window :~
 
Time will tell. Whatever happens, I hope the pool remains in use and doesn't just get filled in.
 
Would be nice to see that area refurbished really, the bird aviary next to is was empty when I went and the other enclosures like the skunk one are a bit something or nothing. I think the whole area needs a revamp.
 
There is definitely still a plan to put animals in the pool. I know what one of the ideas was and its an interesting idea but the plans seem to be changing so much I suggest we wait for an official announcement (or the animals turning up). I agree James B, I hope they sort out that whole area as it is a bit empty for the entrance area of a zoo.
 
Did hear way last year that pelicans may be housed there but as you now with EZ things always change in a good way :)
 
It'll be interesting to see what the binturong enclosure is used for, it's in a good location and has a secure perimeter. A small cat maybe?

Binturong! JamesB's post was misleading - the lone male binturong has indeed gone to Linton, but he wasn't their *only* male binturong - just one being kept apart whilst they finalised his move. The timeline goes something like this:

1) 1.1 Binturong - Billy and Bali - held in the "old" Binturong enclosure on Carnivore row.
2) Billy and Bali moved to the "new" Binturong enclosure that once hold Diana monkeys.
3) Pair split up for some reason or other, and zoo obtains new male, Ali. Zoo now holds 2.1 Binturong.
4) Ali and Bali are held in "old" Binturong enclosure, whilst Billy is held in the "new" enclosure until his departure.
5) Billy departs, Ali and Bali move into "new" enclosure. Zoo holds 1.1 Binturong.
 
I think SMR may have meant the old enclosure? It could well be used for a small cat.

Haha, no need to apologise - just gave me a chance to post the full and epic tale again ;)

I have my suspicions about the old enclosure, but I'm happy to wait and see :p especially as I've heard conflicting things!
 
Sorry a few quick questions!
We are visiting Scotland for 1st time (going to HWP firstly) Then spending 3 days in Edinburgh staying at Holiday Inn for 2 nights. (Hopefully 2 days at zoo if I get my way).
We have had to pay for zoo entrance to guarantee panda tickets and are booked for 10.30 am slot. How long approximately does it take to get from the entrance to the panda area? Do we have to be there before entrance time to queue to get a good view?
If we get in at 9am will there be enough time to get a good look at the enclosures en route?
We are really looking forward to visiting both zoos/parks whatever the weather :D :rolleyes:

Any tips on animals/enclosures we must not miss :eek: Hopefully we will see EVERYTHING!
