In point of fact, if you read the article the liger was produced some time ago; the recent birth is a liliger, born of a female liger and a male lion.

Would the offspring of this pair be even bigger than a liger (in the same way a liger is bigger than both of its parents)?
 
This is not something that should be celebrated. There is a finite number of spaces for animals in captivity and this hybrid is now occupying one of them, meaning that a genetically valuable animal may not.

You are right talking about space, but if this unique animal will attract more people, zoo's income will grow. It can be more important for zoo which has opportunity to extend, and which builds new exhibits each year.
