Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2012 #3

I have just found this, apologies for not giving correct link, I'm not very technical, www.youtube molly badham twycross zoo, Molly when she appeared on Tiswas in 1979 with baby orang and chimp, also Mr.Chris Tarrant long before he was in the business of making people millionaires, hope you like it as much as I did!

Can you conclusively state for the record that the claims that it was White-nosed the zoo were getting are - as we all suspected - complete and utter cobblers? :p

I think you can see from my photos below (taken on 13th September) that they are brown-nosed (ring-tailed) coatis. They looked like youngsters to me.

What happened to the orang orangeperson, I don't know of him?

I don't know, I wasn't meaning him in particular just that they were humanised apes which then had to go live in not exactly great accommodation for the rest of their lives.

Been looking the little male orang up. According to the 2002 studbook he is in Moscow. Can anyone give any more up to date info

Edit: I've found 2 offspring Lea born in 1993 in Krefeld and an unnamed infant in 2000 in Moscow

Jantan's offspring are (AFAIK):

Lea f 1993
Zakhar m 2000 (now in Novosibirsk)
Joly f 2005 (now in the Monkey World nursery)
Flora f 2009 (Moscow)
Cezan m 2010 (Moscow)

That's the whole 'Raison'd'etre' of Twycross of course, that it grew willy-nilly from a collection of pet and humanised animals and wasn't started as a Conservationist's Dream or to be a major Zoological Park or anything else really. I think they are still showing the results of that background even today.:(

Good news on the giraffe front:

Good news for the Giraffes, but a very backward move for the zoo which has lost a high profile species known to any none zoo nerd.Cannot wait to see what high class or high profile species takes their place, but some how don't think it will be that exciting.Have to wonder if they will lose any experienced keeper's now the Giraffe are leaving!

I think it's the best option. Their enclosure is not good. Why keep something when other areas need to funding.

Chimps for me. Giraffes I would imagine are relatively easy to rehome, but the chimps not so so hopefully funds can keep going towards that.

Edit - I do find visiting twycross a bit odd at the moment with all the work going on. It's definitely a place on a journey

Good news for the giraffes?, well by looking at the photos of where Harriett and Keisha will be living at Blair Drummond I would agree, it certainly looks better than where they are currently residing. Good news for Twycross Zoo?, I would say no, this is another popular species leaving the zoo in recent times not long after they euthanized their two sea lions, I personally think both species will be greatly missed by the visitors which could eventually result in poorer receipts at the pay box. I agree that the current giraffe accommodation is dated and is not very attractive, pity they couldn't have built new housing for them or at least refurbished their current house, same with the sea lions, not to worry, at least in the near future we will see the return of both tigers and lions in the new carnivore exhibit. I wonder what they will do with the giraffe house when they have departed, a new meerkat exhibit perhaps, as its not really suitable to rehouse the remaining green mile chimps. I wish the giraffes well in their new home and hope they have a safe journey to Blair Drummond, pity it didn't happen sooner, then perhaps Justin would have been able to join them at their new home in Scotland.

Will admit the enclosure and house look dated, but its actually better than some more modern house's including one built less than 4 years ago, also Twycross never had any issue with the hooves on any of their Giraffes un-like a few other collections which are alot closer to been a world class zoo than Twycross is.Also its not as easy as you might think to find somewhere to look after hybrid Giraffes,as most collections going into Giraffes now want to keep either pure Rothschild's or Reticulated Giraffes.Yes Twycross does seem to be on abit of a journey lets just, hope its not a journey that sinks the place!

I have to agree that it will be a long shot for Twycross.

I really hope they have some things amazing lined up ... as losing 2 high profile species (sea lions and giraffe) in the space of a couple of months may backfire on the zoo.

I wonder what will happen to the space vacated? Taking in some pure-bred giraffe instead? I cannot for the world see them starting renovations there as it looks more than likely they are quite serious now about a new chimp exhibit (which will take most if not all financial resources available for rebuilding or new buildings at Twycross Zoo.

Cannot say both of these exhibits were world class though. Sure enough Blair Drummond Safari Park has a good giraffe exhibit. However, in that exhibit I have to admit that in 2011 1 adult giraffe and 1 neonatal calf died at their facility. Furthermore ..., I still cannot account for what happened to a further 1.2 other individuals at Blair Drummond!

at least in the near future we will see the return of both tigers and lions in the new carnivore exhibit.

You say that, but I'll only believe it's happening when it happens.

Undoubtedly an improvement for the animals but Twycross is shedding big-name species at a rate of knots. Hmmm.

Thank Bob for Yorkshire WP's impending arrivals - the thought of not having giraffes within an hour's drive is not a pleasant one to me!
