Thank you for the update. Has Beardsley released any info. on how the storm was there yet?

Bronx will reopen on Saturday.
Central Park and Queens are closed today and will release an update later.
Prospect Park is open.
Zooplantman already pointed out the unfortunate aquarium situation.
Would it be feasible to go to the Bronx on Saturday, the exact day it opens? Like, can I expect most of the animals and exhibits to be out and open, and do you think the tiger cubs will be out?

Just to be safe I'd go a day or two after it opens. It might not be too crowded on Sat. since it will be the first day it's reopen. At the same time, that could mean a huge crowd, too.

This was posted yesterday by Jim Breheny, Executive Vice President of WCS Zoos and Aquarium and director of the Bronx Zoo about what's happening at the New York Aquarium and how some of the animals did. Since this was posted about 24 hours ago and they haven't released anything about moving animals, I take it the aquarium isn't moving any of their animals out at this moment, although, it may be too early to say that for sure.

Does anyone know which animals they might move if necessary?

I doubt anyone here could answer that.
It must depend on what systems are compromised, where alternate suitable facilities exist, whether transportation can be arranged (much of the Metro area has no gasoline), health of individual animals for translocation, etc.
One problem with the flooding in NYC is that electrical systems were under salt water and need to be replaced. IF the aquarium has power, they may still need new equipment and that may be hours away, days away or weeks away.

Remember the situation at the Aquarium of the Americas after Hurricane Katrina.

I think it's safe to say that they're not going to move their Pacific Walruses, Harbor Seals, Alaskan and Southern Sea Otters, or their Northern Fur Seals since they aren't in urgent need and they won't die if they are out of a pool for a little while. The completely water dependent animals without working systems will, obviously, be moved out first.

They say that Hurricane (Superstorm) Sandy was a historic storm but if we don't do something about global warming, then just about every big storm is going to be just as bad or worst. Hate to say it but, it won't be too much longer when many of our homes from our capital, Washington D.C., to even Chlidonias' front door step in New Zealand is going to be underwater. People think we have a lot of dangerous and troublesome incounters with wildlife now, just wait when the world's above ground earth is just about half of what it is today.

Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is open now, and is offering half-price carousel rides through Sunday.
The Bronx Zoo has been mostly cleaned up now. There are plenty of animals that are off-exhibit, some due to the November chill, some due to remaining debris in their habitats, but a good amount are on-exhibit. Some of the outdoor animals (rhinos, gorillas, etc.) are on display indoors.

Where're the Gorillas displayed when they're indoors?

Here's some pics from the National Zoo

When I was driving to and from the Bronx, there were little gas stations with 60 cars waiting in line for gas, as it's the only place with oil. I swear that there was one line with a hundred cars in it at least. Those poor people must have been waiting for hours. I know this isn't zoo-related but I hated Sandy. One reason I don't want to post on a public forum. Anyways, I hope that eventually everyone will get power back, and we as Americans need to be with one another. It's those little acts of kindness that count.

Well, if we don't do something about Global Warming soon, then we all better be ready to get together (literaly) because we're all going to be squeezed into the little land left and every storm going to be just like Sandy and even worst.:(

Those stupid politicians won't take this thing seriously:mad::mad::mad:
At least Obama is much better then Romney. Obama won't build a butt-ugly pipeline straight through the continent and destory everything conservationalists been building for the last 50-100 years.:mad:
