also I must say I'm very surprised at your extremely Eurocentric view here. Just because the Germans call them "bamboo bears" then the rest of the world should too?! I say either "Chinese bear" or "white bear". :p

That's a bit of a harsh over-reaction! Did I say the rest of the world should do something because the Germans say so? :rolleyes: Anyway, bamboo bear is logical as it is both accurate and specific, unlike Chinese bear or white bear.

To help appease the perceived imbalance, I put "black and white bear" into an online English-Maori dictionary but not suprisingly it didn't come up with anything :).

sorry, channelling Fuzzball; the "humour" must have escaped you :p

I am going to stick with Magpie Bear.


EDIT: I have just realised that Fuzzball obviously went too far in his "humour" over the last few days and has just been banned. What will his next name be? We should do a poll on that!
 
Apologies for the sense of humour fail :)

Are you going to write a poem to mark Fuzzball's departure? I will miss him actually although I may be in a very small minority.

To get back on topic: I prefer the name binturong, as I like native local names unless they are too artificially applied

I'm sure he'll be back soon. I didn't mind him most of the time, but he did go a bit overboard with the sarcasm sometimes. I could write a poem..."Tarsius, Tarsius, what a jolly Arsius..."
 
You realize that the last three names are pretty much the same. I prefer Binturong since that's what I called it first but I've called it both that and Bearcat.

I think this description would probably have come from initial long distance views in the Wild, where the animal looks predominantly White(it is more White than Black). Later when they found it was black and white it was already named....

Binturong. I saw a TV show where people were trying to figure out why Cincinnati's mascot is a Bearcat when the species clearly didn't exist. I guess they either don't have computers/phones or they are more lazy than me. I think the confusion would be cleared a bit more if it was just called a Binturong but, then again, that name might confuse more people. My dad prefers Bearcat.

Pertinax- From pictures the animal looks more black than white with a little white here and there and around the head. I've never seen the animal in real life so I don't know what it looks like in person. I might get to sneak down to Cincinnati in June (probably won't happen) so mabye I'll get to see my first Bearcat/Binturong there.:)

Binturong to me sounds.... I don't even know. It's also hard to say or at least doesn't sound right. If you ever go to a Cincinnati Bearcats home football game can see Lucy there as well. I can see why Cincinnati fans can get confused because the mascot literally looks a like a bear and a cat combined with a red nose instead of a civet. I went to a game last year and whenever the our team achieved a first down, the sound of a cougar would play on the soundboard.

Well they're living in a nocturnal exhibit and she's in a bright, sunny place. No wonder. I may be able to see all three if I do go in June because I always go to the Children's Zoos. They have a pretty great collection in there at most zoos so I don't know why it's directed towards children. I love the Bronx Zoo's Children's Zoo except they don't label much.

What do you mean exactly? They keep the babies, playground, small animal presentations, and cute looking and acting penguins reserved in the children's zoo. Usually those are things children are more interested in when at a zoo.
 
Some zoos do have a lot more animal species in their Children's sections. For example, San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas (birds at least), and Lincoln Park.

I believe as of now the zoo has only 23 species in the 55,000 square foot area so yeah maybe you're right.

If I do go it seems this school year (not 2012 but school year 2012-13) is the year of the penguin as my Central Park Zoo visit has given me four new species for me (Southern Rockhopper, King, Gentoo, Chinstrap) and if Cincinnati happens I'll get to see much more!!:D I might be able to go to Cleveland during the visit because a family friend live down there so is the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo worth a visit or not (I'll probably go either way)?
