Even if the tiger exhibit was expanded into the lynx exhibit, the space would still be too small for Amur Tigers. Kuma can still climb very well despite her physical capabilties. The AZA wanted Beardsley to use the Bobcat as an ambassador animal. I don't know how construction is going, but making the ugly old bear exhibit nice-looking isn't the only problem. Space is too, as the exhibits were too small. Hopefully there will be more space, but I doubt it.

I thought you posted on the Beardsley Zoo News thread that the zoo recieved two new male lynx to breed with the females.

The Amur Tigers should be moved (and the possible new Amur Leopard should move with them) and their currently exhibits given to smaller animals. Lynx in the old Andean Bear exhibit and mabye some new Andean Bears in the Amur Tiger exhibit if they take the barrier between the two down. I know they won't do it (no zoo would) but if they put a net top on the Amur's exhibit then they could give Desmond a really nice and large exhibit. There'd be room for a mate there two. They'd also have to remove the barrier for that plan.

Good for Kuma:D. What are the Amur Tiger's names anyway? Domestic Cat's? The Bobcat's? Grey Fox?

I hope they give the new animal(s) enough space although you are probably right.:(

That was a test. If you read carefully enough, you would notice that they sent one of their female lynx to Stone Zoo, and received a male from Assiniboine Park Zoo. They did not receive two male lynx, although that was the original plan. Please read carefully.
I will PM you names of the zoo animals.
My next visit should be soon after Thanksgiving.
 
Attica park
1it was the first zoo i have visited (before 2 years)
2 it maked me more interest on animals
3 that day i visited it i started my dream with my friend. to start a zoo when we grow up
4 it has the 3rd biggest bird collection in the world
5 it was the first time i saw squirrel monkeys and i really loved them
 
Toronto Zoo
1. One of the few zoos that is fully geographically themed (no random animals placed throughout the zoo)
2. Has a very diverse collection
3. Exhibits many uncommon species like wombats, echidnas, spotted necked otters, and hyenas.
4. Has many great exhibits like Tundra Trek and the African Savanna.
5. Participates in many conservation programs.
6. Has an interesting future with new exhibits for giant pandas, giraffes, and Canadian animals.
 
Seneca Park Zoo:

* The first zoo to artificially inseminate a polar bear. I am hoping for a successful outcome -- the zoo expects to figure it out by Thanksgiving time.
* Having the oldest North American river otter in a U.S. Zoo before he passed away.
* Despite its size and a few outdated exhibit, the zoo continues to make small changes like adding new species or sprucing up exhibits.

Buffalo Zoo:
* For exhibiting rare species found in U.S. Zoos like Roan antelope, golden tiger, reindeer, and tamandua, to name a few.
* For making the decision to send away the polar bears to better zoos while they figuring out funding for their new exhibit. Allowing Nanuq to retire and hopefully breed successfully at the Columbus Zoo made me very happy.
* For making their children zoo a locally themed exhibit, focusing on the Erie Canal and preserving an old barn.

Do you know if the Buffalo Zoo has had success introducing Alya to Pedro? He did not get along well with Annowre, the former female ocelot. Although they were never meant to breed as they were two different subspecies.

Thank you. Is it a safe assumption that as us Humans develope better medicine and begin to live longer, captive animals will start to live longer as well? I think around 100 years is enough time for a person, mostly because the longer our lives are, the shorter the lives of wild animals are...
More people, less space, more destruction of wildplaces, less animals.:(

Less. I'd like more just so I can enjoy wildlife even longer but if my body was pretty much a vegtable I would just like to pass on preacefully and then wander the Earth as a Ghost continuing to enjoy wildlife. Well, unless Heaven has a zoo.:D It has dinosaurs and there the Dilophosaurus don't spit poison or have retractable neck frills.

I know. I fell for it when I saw Jurassic Park for the first time. This also lead me to believe all the animals in the films all lived during the Jurassic and that the Tyrannosaurus Rex was the largest dino of them all (don't know why as the movie has larger Brachiosaurus in it). When the 3rd film came out, I refused to believe that the Spinosaurus was bigger.:rolleyes: They also got me believing that Velociraptors were like 6ft tall.

If it's wrong than why do zoos and other attractions have them as spitting?

If I had to guess, it's due to the familiarity of the movie. That image sells and draws crowds, as it is one of the most popular parts of the movie.

Teaching another generation wrong information. Unfortunetly, image and wanting to draw in crowds has left many endangered species out of luck in captivity. The Bronx caved in in 2009.

The venom at least is in the original novel, so can't really blame Hollywood for that one (can't remember if the frill is mentioned or not).

The whole frill buisiness got me into thinking the Dilophosaurus was related to the Frill-Necked Lizard!! Absolute craziness.:rolleyes:
 
12 years ago our Zoo was in danger of shutting down and it lost AZA accredidation. I am proud of our President Dr Bill Foster and the progress we have made. Trails of Africa with its flex plan and its all bull herd is unique and it has made a world of difference to the zoo which has basically doubled since he has been CEO as far as exhibit quality.
 
I'm just happy to finally have a "home" zoo in the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Years of having to trail down to Twycross or arrange weekends away for Chester, Whipsnade or London.
I've seen the park grow from it's farm park back ground into an impressive wildlife park. Wasn't too sure, origionally, about the grand sizes of the enclosures but having recently revisited other collections I can now appreciate that size matters, especially lion country and the area the animals have.
