Life of Pi

PS* I meant that in the old old days, brave meant cowardice, but somewhere slim the lines it changed to mean courageous. According to google, the original meaning lives on in the word "bravado".
so Braveheart actually means......

wait, this is going to be another one of those threads that wanders way off the original topic of pie fillings isn't it?

Ok after watching a couple more trailers and stuff, I really want to see this movie!! I have a couple questions, though. One, what's better, the book or the movie (as I will probably read the book and watch the movie)? Two, is that a dead Spotted Hyena laying next to the Tiger? And three, when you first see Pi on the life boat, a zebra is with him. What happened to the zebra?

Even though this is a fictional story I can't help but feel sad for all the zoo animals that dies.:(

Thylacine, the boat gets run over by a Nazi sub in the end. The zebra fell out of the boat earlier and was eaten by a an unnamed species of shark. The musical was was better than both the book and the movie.

jeez put a "Spoiler alert" first!!! Anyway the shark wasn't unnamed, it was a wobbegong. It was just that the boy was pronouncing it as a "woebegone shark", which made it seem like the shark was just really sad at eating the zebra.

So to get back to Jaguarundi's thread topic, has anybody seen this movie, and if so, would you recommend it?

I only listen to audio books, so I probably thought he was saying "woe be gone!" in a similar tone as "you shall not pass!".

David, I saw the stage version, and it was fantastic. They used one of Siegfried and Roy's white tigers, but the other animals were just actors in wire mesh, like in the War Horse stage play.

Wooooow, way to ruin it for me. I didn't want to know how it ended!! What about the hyena?

It's hard to give anything away without ruining the whole point of the story. I'd suggest reading it. Yann Martel uses such colourful language that it's a joy to read.

I'm considering buying it on my Kindle. How is saying 'yes, there is a dead Spotted Hyena in the boat with the Tiger' or 'no, there isn't a dead Spotted Hyena in the boat with the Tiger' giving any major part of the story?

I know this isn't important but I'm just curious, what subspecies of Tiger is this? Bengal?

Who says it's actually a hyena though? ;)

yes it is a dead spotted hyaena, and yes it is a vitally important part of the plot. The hyaena being dead is the catalyst for the whole second half of the movie. Happy now? You have forced us to ruin the movie for you even more!

And it is a Bengal tiger (that part isn't important at all).

Yes I am happy. Just knowng the hyena is important to the second half doesn't ruin that much for me. What nanoboy posted ruined it for me but I'll still both read the book and watch the movie. The Tiger subspecies thing was just out of personal interest. I like knowing what subspecies things are. Probably comes from my zoo animal recording days (which are these days).

if it helps, the Nazi submarine doesn't sink the boat on purpose, it was entirely accidental. But the hyaena corpse is relevant to this as well.

I think we should now stop talking about the hyena corpse and the Nazi submarine.

if you don't want it answered then why even ask it? I won't give you the answer, but I can't guarantee that nanoboy won't!!

That's a good point. I'd go delete it but it's in your repsonse and deleting it won't change the quote. (cough cough take the quote out before nanoboy sees it cough cough)
