Come on down to the monkey buffet

And here I was thinking that it was going to be a buffet of monkeys like on The Temple of Doom!

Does anyone know the name of the red fruit in pic 4?

Cheers! When I lived in the Caribbean, they called them 'pommeracs'. I have never seen them in Australia; if you have never had one, try to taste one, because they are heavenly!

pommerac is derived from the French words for "Malay apple"!

 Well look at that. I had no idea! I suppose I should have guessed that 'pomme' referred to 'apple'...

How about this one: in the Caribbean, satsumas/mandarins are called 'portugals'! Explain that!!

that's actually an interesting one because loads of languages call oranges "portugals" (in the version of their own language of course). Mandarin is derived from the Portuguese word mandarim (originally for Chinese and later attached to the fruit, probably for their orange colour likened to that of robes worn by Mandarins). I thought that may have something to do with it, but it's not. I found the answer here:
Orange Peel(Citrus Sinensis) | Parasitology Center Inc.
Portuguese navigators have also been credited with bringing orange trees to the Mediterranean region around 1500. After introduction of the sweet orange, it was quickly adopted as an edible fruit; it was so highly regarded that wealthy persons grew oranges in private conservatories, called orangeries. Certainly by 1646 it was well known in Europe. In some South East Indo-European languages the orange was named after Portugal, which was formerly the main source of imports of sweet oranges. Examples are Bulgarian portokal Greek portokali Persian portaghal Albanian portokall, Macedonian portokal , and Romanian portocala. In Italian the word portogallo to refer to the orange fruit is dialectal. It means literally "Portugal". Similar words are in common use in most Italian dialects across the whole country. Related names can also be found in other languages: Turkish portakal, Arabic al-burtuqa Amharic birtukan, and Georgian p'ort'oxali. Portuguese, Spanish, Arab, and Dutch sailors planted citrus trees along trade routes to prevent scurvy. On his second voyage in 1493, Christopher Columbus took the seeds of oranges, lemons and citrons to Haiti and the Caribbean.

How fascinating! You are quite good at research. Now how did you find those croc pics?

do you have any other fruit questions? :p

I always knew that search engines were really operated by hordes of people in developing countries (like NZ :D) who sorted through through websites manually. Never mind the virtual spider that is supposed to crawl through cyberspace indexing stuff.

I thought countries like Thailand were having problems with monkies hanging around in towns and stealing food from shops and people. So now we're going to give them a buffet and invite them to stay? Interesting technique.

@nanoboy- Did you ever see that video on that monster Philippine Crocodile accused of eating a few people (stomach pump reveiled the opposite). I never found out what happened it that croc. I know they didn't kill it and they were sending it out but does anyone know where exactly it was sent to? Chlidonias should have the answer in a couple of seconds I presume:D

I only ask Chlidonias when my searching skills fail me. You, however, don't even bother to try. ;)

The croc was big news a few months ago and will top your search results.

The monkey thing is a religious festival. Are you dyslexic? Why I ask, is that I have quite a few friends that are, and they dislike reading with a passion because it stresses them out.

I didn't have time to search it then, I do now.

Man-eating Super Croc: GIANT Croc Captured - Bing Videos

Here's one of the two videos I saw on it. In the other they pumped his stomach and found that the two Humans had not been eaten by this big guy. I still couldn't find his fate, though.

I'm not dyslexic. I know it's religious, I don't know what I was thinking when I had posted that, possibly had my mind around the giant croc thing when I typed that up. Still, several Asian countries do have problems with monkies in the cities. Probably the shop keepers and tourists are the majority who have problems.

You should check out the rat temple in India.

I've heard of it. I saw a video with a man sharing a banana with one of those rats. Those are Brown Rats, no? If they are then it's strange that the Indian people worship an animal that most people want to kill and that wasn't even native to the country.

they are black rats, which are native to India. If you do a google search you can find out why they revere these particular rats.
