ZSL London Zoo Future Of the Mappin terraces

Ah i see. That's good then I guess :)

I also forgot the roundhouse and a kiosk

Just as a little tangent, i'll post what the listed buildings are now used for...

Mappin Terrace - Original redevelopment for sloth bears, hanuman langurs and muntjac. Currently being redeveloped for wallabies and emu. (grade II)

Penguin Pool - Held porcupines briefly, now sits empty (apart from some recent artwork) (grade I)

Raven's Aviary - part of a floral display if I remember correctly. (grade II)

Clock Tower - orginally a llama hut. Now a first aid kiosk. (grade II)

Giraffe House - Part of the Cotton Terraces. Still holds giraffes and has always done so. (grade II)

East Tunnel - Still in use (grade II)

North Entrance Kiosk - not sure on this one (grade II)

Casson Pavillion - Now holds bactrian camels, bearded pigs, pygmy hippos and temporary exhibits (grade II)

Round house - Has held a wide variety of animals (from bears to apes and even an elephant). currently holds aye-aye and ring-tail lemurs. (grade I)

Telephone Kiosk - not sure on this one (grade II)

Its interesting that they've been able to alter the Mappins as drastically as they have. Although the original structure is still there, much of it is now infilled and turned into a sloping hillside. Only the top level has escaped major alteration, I think.

Lions v Tigers... wherever the lions are displayed, they will probably show better than the Tigers- less secretive, bolder temperament etc. Either species could be displayed to good effect on the Mappins (or whatever it will become now) and the one that isn't could do equally well in the existing Cat Terrace area- in an enlarged and improved exhibit.

Tigers could be linked to the nearby Komodo dragons, but Lions would perhaps make a better(visible) exhibit and utilise the space more fully if a larger group was allowed to develop..

Pertinax, I was just about to post that I had changed my mind about Tigers on the Mappins due to the activity levels.

also, think of the packages that London could sell for the Mappin Cafe: "Lunch with the Lions" or something like that (much like Chester uses the Oakfield house and then a tour of one section).

I have a feeling that the canal bridge may be listed, i'm not sure, perhaps this is linked with the tunnels? What about the Snowdon aviary, is that listed?

I think the old listed raven cage is (or at least has) been used as a bird feeder for the resident sparrow population. The mesh on the cage are big enough for the sparrows to hop through, and it stops all the food being stolen by bigger birds.

I'm glad the Cat Terrace is not listed, perhaps they should get it pulled down before it is! I've been looking at an aerial photo of the terrace. It's a bit of a maze, and I always feel a little disorientated in there. There is a lot of public space which is a bit of a waste, and I think there is some off show areas in there. There are three enclosures with primates in, and three with cats, but the actual floor space is even bigger than that. If the area with the cat terrace aviary was included, and the pelican and flamingo pool, there would be room to build a massive tiger space (upto 6x what the current exhibit is), as well as enclosures for the gibbons and langurs. I dare say there may even be room for a new tapir or anoa enclosure (although almost certainly not both).

Below I've drawn round the area roughly covered by the cat terraces and flamingo pool. The blue line is the area that the tigers have currently. One thing that is very promising is the amount of mature trees in the area.

Is all that really taken up by the cat terraces?!
It would be brilliant if the tigers could get just half of that.

I couldn't find any info on the planning application for the Mappin Terraces, so no way of knowing how they got around the listed structure problem or whether the wallaby/emu exhibit is going to be a temporary sticking plaster.

ZSL recently submitted planning application for the redevelopment of the Childrens Zoo, with the same architects that designed BUGS. It's still being deliberated by Westminster Council.

they has a brand new children's zoo not that long ago didn't they?

dont get our hopes up people please! as far as we know nothing may come of the work on mappin and it may remain just as a display of architecture!

Well no... its going to continue to display animals- Australian fauna in the first instance.

you CANT say that for definite! i know we would all like to believe that but its zsl's descision and at the moment its not confirmed what will happen in the future

It IS confirmed that ZSL will be keeping emus and wallabies on the mappins...

All we were doing is imagining what could be done with it...

There is a large board in front of the Mappin Terraces which states the area is being developed for an Emu & Wallaby exhibit...is that not sufficient evidence for you?

Much of this discussion seems to be working on the assumption that there is some sort of overall design at work. Would that it were so! I really don't think there's any sense that anyone is looking ten years ahead, and thinking of what the Mappins could become. They really are just a wallaby and emu enclosure now. The wallabies are in there, incidentally, and can be easily seen. Not sure about the emus yet. It's definitely an odd one. I can't see many world class (sic) zoos devoting such a space to two species so commonly encountered elsewhere. Ho hum. The Bird House looks nice, though, and Gorilla kingdom, despite its ridiculous moniker, is impressive. And the recent Whipsnade developments are far better than anything seen at that place before. Sop maybe we should give the ZSL the benefit of the doubt (carefully forgetting the butchery of the Clore Pavillion.)

"sighs" i mean the actual future of the exhibit meaning what will happen to it after the wallaby and emus have left, you all talkin about tigers and stuff and i just said dont get your hopes up as nothing has been said, its just a waiting game!
