Mystic Aquarium Mystic Aquarium News

I just realized there was a Mystic Aquarium news thread! I was just about to create one but noticed this!
Tomorrow, the African Penguin chick Blue Pink who hatched on January 28, will be making its public debut.
Calendar - Penguin Chick's First Swim - Mystic Aquarium
In addition, some older news from late 2011/2012:
A male Beluga Whale named Naluark joined Mystic's pod in October 2011 in hopes he'd breed with either Kela or Naku, or be male competition for Juno and encourage him to breed.
Rocky, Mystic's old Pacific Harbor Seal who was the oldest marine mammal there, had to be euthanized due to cancer in late February 2012.:(

A 3 month old Grey Seal named Spooner in honor of the recently deceased Dr. Tracey Spoon, the aquarium's research scientist, has been admitted to the Seal Rescue Clinic.

A Grand Cayman Iguana from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has arrived at Mystic. "Nigel" should be on public display.

Unfortunately, Kodiak, the 1 ton Steller Sea Lion, was euthanized today after he didn't respond to treatments for liver disease and kidney failure. What a shame.:(

New program called Trainer for a Day. Spend the day with Belugas, Sea Lions, and Penguins. Trainer for a Day: $375 non-members, $350 members - Mystic Aquarium
I also want to mention that a future African Penguin exhibit is being planned, according to snowleopard's 2012 Road Trip. I have also done some research and found out that eventually, Dolphins should make their return to Mystic, and Sea Otters will be a new species for the aquarium. If all these new exhibits are as good as Mystic's other exhibits, then Mystic could certainly elevate its rank in America's Best Aquariums.

From the Aquarium's Facebook;
We are the proud recipient of the 2012 Association of Zoos & Aquariums Excellence in Diversity Award for our Community Classroom program offered to Stonington High School’s intellectually disabled students. It's an honor to be recognized for our growing number of initiatives and programs for people with physical and intellectual disabilities.

In the Green Iguana exhibit? Obviously the Green Iguana is gone then.

Where will the new exhibits be built? It doesn't seem to me that Mystic is very large and I didn't know it had room to spare.

From the Aquarium's Facebook;
"Timely with the season, one of our flag cichlids, or Mesonauta festivus, recently laid eggs. Festivus means merry or festive and you can see this tropical, freshwater fish in the Hidden Amazon on our main exhibit floor."

Mystic Aquarium has just added a new exhibit for Giant Frogfish (Antennarius commerson) in the Main Building.
Also, Baranov, a male Northern Fur Seal, has returned to the aquarium after living at the New England Aquarium for a bit.
