Chester Zoo Chester 2012 #4

Had a brief visit today - sadly no sign of young otters, nor Tafari (though long, close views of Stuma).

Noted a couple of young lion-tailed macaque - anyone know how old?

The two G Indian Rhino were chasing each other round the enclosure which seems promising :)
 
Zoogiraffe and I saw the baby otters and were told they are often out.

Saw Tafari twice.

I presume they will be kept in the old indoor areas of the old Orangutan House. Maybe they will also allow 'Tuan' to have a chance at breeding with the females while they are there, as the young Blackpool male 'Ramon' does not seem to be up to it.

That doesn't actually answer my question ;)
I hope that the Blackpool orangs will be able to get some fresh air in the old orang paddock behind the fence; in which case they would be visible if they climb up the frame, without technically being on show.
I hope they can keep Tuan and Ramon from getting on each others' nerves.

What is the purpose/reason for that Stockade-type fence in front of that island?:confused:

I doubt Ramon will annoy Tuan very much just by being in the same house- I doubt he would 'longcall' at his stage of development. If he was an adult male things would be different.

I have heard reports and even seen 'Ramon' performing his 'longcall'. I am also pretty certain that if 'Victoria' wasn't in the same enclosure as him he would stand a better chance of mating with her two daughters, 'Cherie' and 'Summer'.

Well given the fact that Tuan hasn't used the outside enclosure since about March this year,I guess there is every chance that they might be allowed outside!
 
What about Puluh? He'll be within long-calling distance of the new boy.
I'm surprised to hear Tuan has been out that recently. It'd be lovely for Tuan to meet some new ladies, age not an issue with him :)

I didn't count 'Puluh' as he is in a seperate part of the building and a bit further away but yes, he'll hear him too. But then again 'Ramon' may not longcall while he is nervous in a strange place.

Whether 'Tuan' is allowed to meet any of the Blackpool females presumably depends on Studbook recommendation but I would have thought it was an obvious opportunity, at least for the two younger ones.
 
Another baby orangutan! Subis (Sumatran orangutan) gave birth yesterday just a few weeks after her sister Emma. Subis's fourth and Puluh's eighth offspring.

It's there, supposedly, as a result of the public throwing items onto the island. I'm not sure why that island specifically, given all the others at the zoo and at zoos in general.

If they're not going to let the Blackpool orangs use it, I'd be really surprised. It's considerably better than what they have at Blackpool and they could benefit from the fresh air, sunshine and an unobstructed view of the sky.

Thanks for the info about the 'fence' but can't quite see the point of it at all.:confused:

I imagine the Blackpool orangs(1.3) would be kept at that end of the old House so some access outdoors would be possible for them- unless they are worried about the water moat (Blackpool's other young male 'Beau' apparently drowned in very shallow water). If any breeding attempt with 'Tuan' is contemplated, the female(s) concerned could be run with him seperately indoors.

Great news.

I would like to see Blackpool's females mixed with 'Tuan' in the hope they would return pregnant as it's been ten years since the last birth and that was 'Summer' one of the two breeding females.
