Chester Zoo Chester 2012 #4

Great news.

I would like to see Blackpool's females mixed with 'Tuan' in the hope they would return pregnant as it's been ten years since the last birth and that was 'Summer' one of the two breeding females.

Tuan has said the very same thing! He's willing to put in the effort!

I would hope so too. ;)

The only real breeding of Bornean Orangutans in recent years have been at Chester, Dudley, Monkey World and Twycross. IMO I think 'Ramon' is perfectly capable of breeding if kept away from the older female 'Victoria'.

Few notes from today:

Ema and Chanua have been moved into Tsavo, so I've finally seen the calf for the first time.
Work was being carried out on the former Gemsbok paddock, whilst Roan Antelope were also not allowed in the paddock as it was somewhat muddy.

Work is being carried out on the Cattle House - a chainlink fence is being put around the Warthog exhibit, much like that around the Giant Anteater exhibit. The warthogs are locked inside and there is a crate set up in the warthog's indoor stalls.

The Asian Small-Clawed Otters are back in their original exhibit, whilst the Babirusa piglets were in the exhibit behind the giraffe house, where the Pudu lived until recently. I didn't see adults in either.

The swap of the Porcupines and the Aardvarks looks to be working well - it's nice to see the Aardvarks closer up and more relaxed, whilst the Porcupines are still fairly visible despite that great ugly den blocking off the indoor viewing.

On my visit last Tuesday, I saw the female adult in the usual enclosure, and on my visit last Wednesday I saw the male adult in the lowland anoa enclosure.

Black Rhinos.

It's great to see Chester's Rhinos breeding again after a short break. 'Ema' is the third oldest breeding female at Chester so when she arrived in 2005 (?) and gave birth four years later it was great too hear.

Did 'Ema' and 'Chanua' have access to both sides of Tsavo 1? Or was another Rhino next door?

Ema and Chanua were on one side. I couldn't see the Rhino on the other side, as the back section was opened out as well.

Sitatunga deer have been moved to next door to the zebras
Is a smaller enclosure which is a shame but its still a good size

Good grief! If the former gemsbok and sitatunga paddocks are empty they could replace or even remove the zoo's ugliest fence which separates them :)

The arrival of the female Aardvark has been announced. She's called Himba
