Chester Zoo Chester 2012 #4

Orangutans

I realise you're all a bit blasé about orangutan births at Chester ;), but no photos or news about Subis's baby......?

Where did the female Aardvark come from ?

Would be good if the UK got more breeding pairs , only Colchester producing young from one female at present .

She came from Arnhem and arrived on 6th December.

Few notes from today’s visit, 1.1 White faced Saki monkeys now on show in miniature monkeys (photo in the gallery). No sign of Kudu or Roan Antelope today but work was continuing on the former Sititunga/Gemsbok paddocks. Also managed to see both Orang baby’s.Finally the zoo now have just 1.1 Jaguar with Coro and Bonita moving to Amazona Zoo leaving the Savanah side of Spirit of the Jaguar empty.

Good grief! If the former gemsbok and sitatunga paddocks are empty they could replace or even remove the zoo's ugliest fence which separates them :)
Along the fence-line that lies almost east to west between those two paddocks are some really old hawthorns from the original hedgerow that was there long before the zoo and it was (is?) the only one remaining.

I'm hoping they haven't grubbed it up?

Jaguar move.

This move took me rather by surprise. I wonder (and presume) if the two old females that Amazona had, have died and 'Coro' and 'Bonita' have been sent there as display Jaguars. I wonder what will happen with the Savannah side. Any idea?

Chester Jaguars.

The two Jaguars still at Chester- is it normal female 'Sofia' and a black (or normal)male? Do they live together now? Have they bred together? I know Sofia has had failed litters with a different male in the past. Has she ever raised any?

Can anyone give a fuller history of these two animals? (their sources, ages, breeding history?)

Remaining Jags are Sofia and Pele (the elderly black male)

They have lived together since the start of this year (following the death of Salvador, who was Sofia's former mate)

They haven't bred together and aren't recommended too. They were put together for companionship only

Sofia had two litters with Salvador. I believe she did attempt to raise them, but unfortunatly both litters were DNS

Sofia - born 2001 at Rostock
Pele - came to Chester from Marwell in 2004 (but born elsewhere)

The mother and son who have just left, were Pele's former mate and there son (castrated obviously to allow him to live with his mother) from his time at Marwell

The first pair were 'Carlos' (Spotted male) and 'Ebony' (Black/Coloured female). 'Carlos' was from Rome and was born 1980 circa. 'Ebony' also came from Rome but was born on 14/04/84. The pair both arrived on 12/04/01, quite an old age for a Jaguar.

When the new 'Spirit of the Jaguar' exhibit opened, Chester received a male from Poznan, 'Salvador'. I remember watching a TV program about his arrival last year. Poznan needed to move him out as he lived in a terrible exhibit. Originally when 'Salvador' on 22/06/01 he was on the Rainforest side and had access to the outdoor Waterfall side.

'Sophia' arrived as a mate for 'Salvador' on 22/09/02 from Rostock. She was born on 22/05/01 so was only a year and a bit old when she first arrived. I believe they had two litters both of which dns, I believe the last was in April 2007.

The Marwell Jaguars arrived in October/November 2004. This was when 'Ebony' and 'Carlos' had both died/euthanised due to old age. When Chester had all five Jags, 'Sophia' and 'Salvador' had the indoor and outdoor Savannah area. 'Pele' the (Black/colored male from Marwell) had the indoor Rainforest area. 'Coro' and 'Bonita' (Mother and son, both spotted from Marwell) had the outdoor Rainforest area.

'Pele' was born at Marwell in 1993 (?) to 'Inca' and 'Tom', he also bred at Marwell on two (?) occasions. His mate, 'Bonita' was born in Belgium (?). 'Pele' and 'Bonita's' son, 'Coro' was born on Boxing day 2000.

As mentioned by Nisha, 'Pele' is just mixed with 'Sophia' for company, this has been the case since the start of the year, 'Salvador' died in late 2011/early 2012 AFAIK.

Thanks Jordan. I think I've seen all the recent previous Jaguars at Chester apart from maybe Coro & Bonita.

I would also have seen the two from Rome while they were still at Rome, and do remember a Black Jaguar there which would have been 'Ebony'. 'Carlos' was a very big male with a gammy leg?

I also remember seeing the other male 'Salvator' at Chester, who seemed to be smaller and darker than his mate Sofia.

Pele's mother, the female 'Inca' you mention at Marwell, would have been, I think, one of their original Jaguars.

Thanks for the information on the Jaguar history Jordan very interesting
Spent many hours watching Coro and Bonita when they were in the waterfall enclosure
They were always active its a shame that they have gone , I do hope that they are replaced

I would think its a pretty safe bet that they will be replaced with a young potential breeding pair at some point in the new year, seeing as since the house was built Chester have taken alot other of zoo's non-breeding animals!

Amazing! Birth of a baby anteater announced on Facebook, seems like an endless stream of babies at the moment.

Am hoping that the cheetahs have cubs again I know the zoo are trying hard :)

On the subject of Cheetahs are the two male cubs still at the zoo?

As far as I know they are there but off show behind the main cheetah enclosure but they are due to go to another zoo in the near future
Someone else here may have more up to date information:)

The plan was to have them moved on by christmas but it didn't come to pass, so lo they are now mooted to move in January.
You're correct that they are in the off show den by the bridle path, separated from mum KT now too.
