Plans For 2013?

I just don't see how people still see Atlanta as a destination zoo. Its funny how old prejudices never die toward the good and the bad. Atlanta isn't worth the 20 dollars to get in. Atlanta has to be badly mismanaged for all the hype and money it has to be in bad overall shape as it is.

Just to clarify, while I'm looking forward to seeing the zoo, it's not that I see Atlanta as a destination zoo but that I see Georgia Aquarium as a destination aquarium!

And 20 bucks is a pretty average entrance fee by UK standards - less than the entrance fee offered today at Dudley Zoo, for instance - so really not something I'd begrudge.

Yep that is whole zoo.

In which case I don't see us having any trouble seeing most/all of the zoo in an afternoon. We'll certainly do the aquarium first either way, as that's what we really want to see in Georgia!

Never understood the love for Atlanta.

Yes, that's coming across! :D

Plans still being finalised but Mote is on the radar as for part of the trip we're staying with a friend not too far away from it.

We'll certainly be hitting Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta, Zoo Miami, Lowry Park Zoo, Disney's Animal Kingdom and Sea World, and if we can plan it out OK Jacksonville, Lubee, St Augustine's and Brevard as well - plus whatever smaller places we can squeeze in (rescue places like Busch Wildlife Sanctuary would be great for us to give a chance to see some of the more elusive natives!). Probably not Busch Gardens, as we just feel we can probably use the time and money better (though never say never).

And I just got in from seeing Patagonian Sea Lions today at Dudley! :D
The only zoo on your definite list that I've visited is Lowry Park. It's definately worth a visit. Plus, they just had an elephant calf, so that's a plus. Mote isn't too great. I never saw any of their exhibits as truly spectacular, and the only reason I'm considering visiting next year is because Patagonian Sea Lions are rare in the United States. However, it was really cool seeing "Molly the Mollusk", a 27 foot long preserved Giant Squid. Mote Marine Laboratory - Mote Marine Laboratory
Busch Gardens is pretty good, but there's too much noise. Music playing everywhere, and of course, rides sometimes ruin a view, but I enjoy my visits there. If you have spare time, I'd consider Naples. They have some species rare in the U.S. (Honey Badgers, Striped Hyenas, Dingos, Fossas, etc.), and the Black Bear exhibit is excellent.

My plans aren't very solid yet, but I'm hoping to complete my degree, spend a few weeks in Egypt, a few weeks travelling around South East Asia, and I'm not sure what to do if I still have spare travelling time afterwards.

I was going to start a new thread called, Zoo Year Resolutions, but this thread has a similar theme. So I will go ahead and post my resolutions:

* Go on a big zoo trip.
* See a tamandua.
* See a tapir.
* See a binturong.
* See a baby bear.
* Visit the Buffalo Zoo.
* Visit Nanuq (male polar bear at the Columbus Zoo).
* Visit the Smithsonian National Zoo by myself.
* Take more animal photos.
* Enter a photo contest.
* Get a zoo apparel item.
* Do a special zoo event I have not done before.
* Hand over the camera to my partner once in awhile.
* Read more zoo signs.
* Have a meet and greet with a zoo animal.
* Spot animals in Asia Trail (Smithsonian Zoo) and finally get some good photos.

* See a baby bear.

You got the Smithsonian nearby. You'll get to see 3 baby bears!:)
I like your format for "Zoo Year Resolutions." Do you mind if I do something similar?
tschlander71- For Atlanta, instead of gorillas, I'd replace it with Rabb's Fringe-Limbed Treefrog.

I know, it was one of my easier resolutions. Go ahead and use that format it you like!

The best place to see baby bears is a national park (Shenandoah or Smokies) in the late spring.

Thanks for letting me use that setup. My "Zoo Resolutions" are to:
-See a baby elephant.
-Visit the Bronx Zoo more than once a year.
-See 3 new zoos I haven't visited before.
-Get good photos on my new camera.
-Visit both aquariums in my state (Mystic and Maritime.)
-See a baby wild cat.
-Visit the Smithsonian National Zoo.
-Contribute more to zoo projects.
-See a Jaguar.
-Do some behind-the-scenes at a zoo or aquarium.
-Have a photo of every exhibit at Beardsley.

Only plan I have is to get my friends to come with me to the Wheatsheaf after a visit to Chester.

I guess I'll use that set-up to go more into depth with my Zoo Resolutions and leave the boring normal people ones out.

-See a Sumatran Rhinoceros
-Visit Newport Aquarium, Cincinnati Zoo, and Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in June
- Visit all three Ct facilities (Beardsley, Mystic, and Maritime)
-Visit all remaining WCS facilities (Prospect Park, New York Aquarium, and Queens)
-Re-visit Bronx at least once
-Visit Staten Island Zoo

Also for my normal person one: Get my driver's permit.

Oh yes I'll probably have to do the college tour this year as well. I'll also probable be volunteering at Bronx.

I'm going to try my best to visit either Indianapolis again, Cleveland, Toledo, Columbus, Brookfield, or San Diego.

With the recent visits to Zoo Santo Inacio and Parque Biológico de Gaia, these are not on my plans to re-visit again this year. Maybe the later.
I will visit Lisbon Zoo and Oceanarium. Maybe Zoomarine and Lagos too. Other plans are Badoca Safari Park and a tour trough Southern Spain. Jerez, the two Valencia Collections and maybe Terra Natura Benidorm can be made.
The other possibilities that most surely won´t happen would be Santillana del Mar and Cabarceno in Northern Spain. This one could have Parque Biológico de Gaia in there too.

My plans for 2013.

At this moment in time I only know of at least three/four collections that are definitely confirmed. Those being, Edinburgh, Sea Life Centre Blackpool, Yorkshire and Chester. As well as those four, my regular trips to Blackpool (Every other week) are also on.

I have plans for a few more collections to do in 2013 however, I cannot get to some of them on my own so will depend on transport. Martin Mere WWT is one I'm planning on in Winter 2013 (Maybe 2014). Flamingo Land possibly in February/March, the entry is only £5 per person at the moment with only the Zoo being open.

Tropical World, Lotherton Hall and Harewood House maybe also do-able however, plans are not confirmed as yet. I hope to meet the likes of Bongorob, Zoogiraffe, Javan Rhino at Blackpool or Chester soon.

I hope to do a 'mini' Lakes tour too. This should consist of Lakes Aquarium, South Lakes Wild Animal Park and Lakeland Wildlife Oasis. This could be done in a day/two.

Also, if anybody would like to meet up at a collection or Blackpool when I'm visiting please pm and we could arrange something.
