I went to Cotswold Wildlife Park yesterday and managed to see the Pallas Cat, Lion, Amur Leopard and Clouded Leopard.

First time I've been for a few weeks and the clouded leopards are now back in the enclosure behind the Amur Leopard they get fed sometime in the last hour before closing time I've managed to get a glimpse off them a few times now at this time of day.

The jaguarundi's are not on show at the moment as they are having the enclosure refurbished.

Like you snowy owl, I was also at Cotswolds wildlife park on Saturday! However I didn't see the clouded leopard! I did manage to see the Asiatic lion, Pallas cat and Amur leopard though. So starting with 3!

Think I'll join this, don't think I'll get far but luckily I live in Kent.

Went to Wingham and Howletts yesterday so I have:

Tiger
Lion
Jaguar
Puma
Caracal
Lynx
Leopard
Serval
Ocelot
Wildcat

I'll confess now that I'm useless with species and sub-species etc so if any I post don't count let me know, I'm learning.

More proof that this isn't as straight forward as it might sound! I had a few hours to spare this morning so made a snap decision to go to Linton. Hardly got off to a flier, the leopard and(as always) the clouded leopard were no shows, so i start on 3- lion, tiger & snow leopard.

A lead which I reckon might take a while to be surmounted.

I'm on a modest 4 with snow leopards at Twycross forgot all about the challenge (not that I expect to get anywhere near competing!) or I might have gone to see the wildcat.

I've kicked off 2013 with a very small number - two. Lion (African) and Tiger (Amur) should be hopefully be on at least eight before 2014. Another great challenge Shorts, one I enjoy as I'm a Felidae lover. :D

Right have added another 3 to my total of 5,after a visit to Twycross which produced Leopard,Snow Leoaprd and Wildcat. So I know stand at the grand total of 8.

After a trip to Colchester today i have added Geoffreys Cat, cheetah & leopard bringing my total to 6.

And I hit the ground rolling with a total of 8....

Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) at Paignton - 27/01/2013

Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) at Paignton - 27/01/2013

African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

South African Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

Caracal (Caracal caracal) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

Arabian Sand Cat (Felis margarita harrisoni) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

Puma (Puma concolor) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) at Exmoor - 28/01/2013

------

Also, further to the previous discussion....

One other species that cannot be seen outside Kent - at least at the moment - is Rusty-spotted Cat, as the Hamerton animals haven't as yet gone onshow.

Exmoor "had" them when I visited in July (i.e. enclosure labelled, but I didn't see, also mentioned on their website).

Very interesting, considering the fact I'm going to Exmoor in a month - I know that they sent their jaguarundi to RSCC for breeding loan last summer, so it is possible they did the same with the rusties.

My visit to Exmoor today has brought confirmation - via a births, arrivals and departures notice board at the entrance to the zoo - that their rusty-spotted cats left in the middle of June 2012, having been sent to RSCC as I suspected.

so how many cat species are in the UK then? I couldn't find a list on this thread.

For the purposes of this challenge, and arranged in the generally accepted eight feline lineages, the "master list" of 24 taxa is as follows:

Tiger -Panthera tigris
Lion - Panthera leo
Leopard - Panthera pardus
Jaguar - Panthera onca
Snow Leopard - Panthera uncia
Indochinese Clouded Leopard - Neofelis nebulosa

Asian golden cat - Pardofelis temminckii

Serval - Leptailurus serval
Caracal - Caracal caracal

Geoffroy's cat - Leopardus geoffroyi
Ocelot - Leopardus pardalis
Oncilla - Leopardus tigrinus
Margay - Leopardus wiedii

Eurasian lynx - Lynx lynx

Cougar - Puma concolor
Jaguarundi - Puma yagouaroundi
Cheetah - Acinonyx jubatus

Leopard cat - Prionailurus bengalensis
Rusty-spotted cat - Prionailurus rubiginosus
Fishing cat - Prionailurus viverrinus
Pallas's cat - Otocolobus manul

Sand cat -Felis margarita
Black-footed cat -Felis nigripes
Wildcat -Felis silvestris

A 25th taxon, Jungle cat (Felis chaus) is also held in the UK as of the past few months, but is only held in a private collection which has occasional open days, and as such is exempt from the challenge unless a public collection goes into them before the end of the year.

Thanks for the list Dave, i doubt i'll get the lot, 20 will probably be about my limit if i'm lucky!
I'm now up to 8 after a visit to Shepreth (my 2nd nearest zoo after Linton) this afternoon, adding Mountain Lion(they dont have pumas, as anyone else whos been there will know!) and Lynx to my collection

Don't worry they'll hit a "wall" soon following which they'll have to be prepared to travel long distances in many directions to improve their totals. This will give plenty o' time for others (including those intrepid public transport explorers;)) to catch up and challenge.
