Jurong Bird Park Jurong Bird Park News

The Jurong Bird Park Map currently on their website shows Crowned Cranes near the Ratites, rather than in the African Waterfall Aviary, are they now housed in one of those pens (with the ostrich)?

Have their been any other changes/developments at the park over the last few months?
 
@zooboy28: Yup a pair of black crowned cranes and a trio of grey crowned cranes have moved in with the ostriches.

No major changes, save for the usual moving around of birds in the SE Asian aviary and Parrot Paradise. They revamped their bird show in December, adding among other acts a nice finale bringing 100 birds on stage in one go (pelicans, flamingos, macaws, cockatoos, roller pigeons).

Haven't heard of any new projects coming up at the park. WRS have their hands full until River Safari, the zoo's polar bear exhibit and Night Safari's new tiger exhibit are completed this year. So bird park will probably have its next major new exhibit in 2014 or later.

Thanks for the update Zooish, presumably the ostrich and cranes get on fine together, but it seems a rather unusual mix.

The show finale sounds cool, would be awesome to see big birds like flamingoes and pelicans fly over and land in front of you.
 
Sadly the pelicans and flamingos just waddle on stage. Would be cool to see 50 flamingos flying overhead though

There are three bird of paradise aviaries (or maybe two?, with one now housing Andean Cock-of-the-rock), with different species, and these are presumably almost always on display.

No idea about the ibis, I didn't note this species on my visit in Dec 2011.
 
The red and king birds of paradise are now off exhibit, with the cock-of-the-rocks taking over their former display aviary. The lessers and 12-wired are on display, with the Wilson's being a wildcard.

The black ibis was spotted some time back in the scarlet ibis aviary, but in recent visits I've failed to see it.
 
New visit to Jurong

Just went back to Jurong (last visit was in September, far too long ago ;)... LOVE THE PLACE !!!!).
Saw a few new birds, mostly parrots. Overall Jurong's parrot collection is really increasing and improving. New species that I had not seen in my last visit:

- Goliath Palm Cockatoo (oh my God the male is huge !)
- Brown Throated Conure (Aratinga pertinax)
- Orange Fronted Conure (Aratinga canicularis)
- Peach Fronted Conure (Aratinga aurea)
- Black Capped Conure (Pyrrhura rupicola)
- Pearly Conure (Pyrrhura lepida)

Also, many of the parrot aviaries have gotten a facelift and now there is a large aviary with Military and Green WInged Macaws (presumable rescued from the the entrance exhibit of winged clipped macaws, that now only has Blue and Golds and Scarlets...)

Also, in the African Aviary I spotted some new species:

- Emerald Starlings (Lamprotornis iris)
- Amethyst Starlings (C. leucogaster)
and there is a breeding pair of Von der Decken's Hornbills with chicks at the aviary, how cool is that? :D

Also saw 3 Oriental Pied Hornbill chicks at the breeding centre (soooo cool..), alongside the usual parrots. And some ducklings (not sure which species) and guineafowl chicks as well. Talking to one of the keepers looks like their breeding has really gone up last year. Nice..

On the other hand the Southeast Asian Birds exhibit is really in need of some help, it is quite old and dated. Maybe when River Safari opens WRS management can give Jurong the attention it needs (and deserves..)?
 
Sorry, I keep on sending posts without actually finishing all I want to say .. I also saw a female Silvery Cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes brevis) that I missed out last time, assumingly because it was off display? How many hornbills does Jurong keep? Are there any other species not on display right now? Do they still have the largest hornbill collection in the world?

The places which I have visited the largest collections of this group of birds I have seen in Weltvogelpark Walsrode and NOP Veldhoven. In Walsrode in the last three years can be seen:

- Buceros hydrocorax hydrocorax
- Buceros rhinoceros silvestris
- Aceros cassidix
- Aceros undulatus
- Aceros plicatus (in last two years off-show)

- Penelopides affinis samarensis
- Penelopides exarhatus sanfordi (off-show)
- Ceratogymna atrata
- Bycanistes bucinator
- Bycanistes brevis
- Bycanistes subcylindricus (off-show)
- Bucorvus abyssinicus.
 
No more Bucorvus leadbeateri ( southern ground hornbill ) and Tockus erythrorhynchus ( red-billed hornbill ) at Walsrode ?

No, but they have probably off-show:
- Tockus deckeni
- Penelopides manillae subniger
- Ceratogymna elata.
 
A rich collection of hornbills I have also seen in December 2011 at NOP Veldhoven in the Netherlands:

Vogelpark Avifauna used to have always an impresive hornbill-collection but I have to check Zootier-liste for what species they have at the moment. I´ve planned to visit this park this year.

Does the park not have Anorrhinus galeritus any more? Any hint of what those "new species" might be? I really would like to see Rhinoplax vigil again. I don't know what Jurong did with their previous pair.

On a sadder note, another zoochatter updated that Jurong no longer has any Wilson's BoP.
 
Yes, there is still Anorhinus galeritus (one female), forgot to mention that one :p

Sorry to hear about the Wilson's Bird of Paradise, wasn't that the only one in captivity?

No idea what the hypotetical new species could be, but I agree it would be great to have Rhinoplax vigil. Does any other place keep them? I never got to see them at Jurong..
 
News from Jurong Bird Park

Apparently Jurong has managed to breed Toco Toucans, the babies being currently at the BRC. Despite the park's sucess with hornbills they never really did much with their toucans, until this new team came along.
Apparently their breeding records went sky high last year, with quite a few first time breedings (including the King Bird of Paradise) and this year alone they are already surpasing last year, with over 150 babies hatched in the different exhibits.
Looks like Jurong is coming back :D.....
