Let's All Have a Moment of Silence for the Newtown School Shooting Victims

This event is so sad, but even sadder is the apparent unwillingness of the American people to learn the lesson that is so obvious.

Not so. it's their stupidity in electing officials who work against society's best interests.

My solution is straight forward. Make all guns that shoot more than six bullets illegal. If you can't hit your target after six shots, you don't need a gun. In fact, for the safety of everyone, don't even get near one.

A high tax on bullets would also help. Two dollars per bullet should suffice. Imagine all the extra revenue to be gained from it.

I do not understand your logic. Six legal bullets to shoot six people would be alright?

@ Monty

I know you love your guns, especially for hunting.
But wasn't this thread thought to be about mourning?
While you are searching for statistics that in your opinion are favourable to the gun lobby, you didn't mention even once- the victims.

Taisha, guns have been around since the 1700s, so you're not going to get rid of them. A ban on guns with only six bullets would limit ownership to pistols and rifles, which have been around for over 200 years. The reasons why shootings are more lethal today is because you can use 30 bullets non-stop without reloading. I would love to have a blanket ban on all guns, but I know that it will never happen. So I push for regulation.

You must be living inside a protective bubble. Don't you realize that zombies are slowly taking over the Earth?!

I really hope that that is sarcasm... And why is this comment necessary on a thread about mourning, especially when the 1 month anniversary was yesterday?

Why does a civilian need a handgun?

Because in America you never know who is also carrying a gun and you never know when/if an armed robber will break into your home. People don't just want to sit around and allow their hard-earned stuff to be taken by a most likely wimpy robber with a gun, they want to defend themselves so that's why people average civilians carry guns.

That is a plausible explanation for having guns, but why handguns? Why not a shotgun if you are at home? Why do you need to carry a concealed weapon on your person?

Tradition as argument for guns? Slavery, collecting scalps were also part of your tradition once.
And does it matter if shootings were more or less lethal earlier on?
By the way, why was the charming way, you had addressed me, removed? I savoured it.

As much as I can understand why your people feel the need to protect themselves, don't you think guns breed guns, or violence breeds violence?
How else could it be explained, that countries with stricter gun control don't have a population that suffers equally?

@nanoboy and Taisha- Of course it's not a plausible explanation for owning guns! And of course guns breed guns and violence breeds violence! I was just saying that that's the reason many people want guns. It's also the same reason many people want big scary looking dogs- for protection. I wish guns could be taken away from everyone everywhere, not just the United States. Thank about how much more peace we'd all have in the world and of all the poaching that'd be almost completely stopped! Unfortunately, as cleusk said, guns aren't going to go away anytime soon so the best solution right now is to try to limit the type and quantities of guns sold.

By the way, this is a memorial thread so I think if we all really want to continue the debate on gun control (not really of a debate since we all seem to be on the same page here) then how about some one makes a Gun Control thread or something so we don't have to pollute this thread with all the technicalities and give this thread the moment of silence it was made for.

Thank you,
ThylacineAlive

Today is the one year anniversary of this tragic event. I hope I speak on the behalf of everyone of ZooChat when I say that our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims, with myself knowing a few of them.
