Because why not? Let's have a ZooChat birding Big Year. Tally lists of birds you've seen (just this year only). I know we have a lot of active birders on the site. We can have categories for world list, single country/region list, single state list, etc.

Who all is in?

I'm in.

So far I've been too busy to actually go out birding, and around Hokitika I'm only going to get about 40 anyway, so right now I'm only on a paltry 14 birds (that's fourteen in case anyone thought it was typo :(). However, all going to plan, I'll be doing some overseas trips this year so I'll get a few more then.

And I'm on one (1) mammal (European rabbit).

What's the NZ big year record?

Since I was already in a friendly competition with jbnbsn99, I'll go ahead and throw my hat in the broader ring. I'm sitting at 83 and I'll be stuck in this vicinity till spring migration I'm afraid. And speaking mammals, I have 6.

Americans have too many birds to look at.

I'll join in. Currently up to 37 species. No mammals or herps yet.

:p

Ok I am in as well. As I this moment, I am on ... I will do a count and post again later.

I'm in too, hopefully this will encourage me to do some birding. I'm currently on eleven birds and one mammal (NZ Fur Seal).

Just a small question, does the bird have to be wild to be counted...?

Bird has to be wild, but feral/introduced species count according to your local birding region bylaws.

You guys have encouraged me to actually start a list of birds, which is fantastic. Anyway, as of 16th January, I am on 44 birds. I have seen a few others that I cannot identify so they are not included in this list.

Not too bad for this early in the year. I added 3 year birds today, one of which was a lifer.

It 's quite cold in michigan so most birds are south for the winter here leaving my tally at 4. I have had the opprutunity to see my first bohemian waxwing and rough legged hawk though.

Since the start of the year I have seen 36 species of bird- nothing really rare but still some nice species including both green and great spotted woodpeckers and a treecreeper.

Those are two birds I really want.
