A day in the life of a princess

I stumbled across this site, while sitting in the Drs office. Thought it might be a fun pass time!! I was actually searching the web for current Barbary Lion articles, and it brought this site up!!

Anyone here currently working with Barbary Lions?

I spend my days with a wide range of animals, anything from your basic farm animal too exotics. I do however keep my distance from the reptiles, I am definitely a mammal girl!! I've been working with Big Cats for 5 years now, it's been a great learning experience, and rewarding at the same time. I continue to learn and educate myself daily.

The simple answer is no. The Barbary Lion is extinct with none represented in captivity. All claimed "Barbaries" are generic lions with unknown or mixed heritage that only look like a phenotypical Barbary.

Weird your from Texas, one of only a couple of states with remaining Barbary's in captivity. And, did you not see my pic? That is one of three Barbary's housed where I am. They are around, far and few. And yes, ONLY in captivity.

Barbary's have been extinct since the 1920's, correct. However Rabat Zoo has several in their possession. As well as Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Oklahoma has several places, mostly sanctuaries that currently have some as well. I certainly know the difference between a Barbary and a African Lion, as I have worked with both. Our male has full mane on his belly, continued all the way to his groin. He is nothing like that of an African, nor is he of "mixed heritage"

The animals in Addis may be the only exception to this, but all the ones in the US are generic, unless you have genetic evidence to counter this. I've personally seen the animals in Oklahoma, Austin, and Victoria, they are no more Barbary than any of the other generic lions in the US.
