I'm very unhappy about the fact that pay drivers have become so common to the point that talented drivers like Kovalainen, Glock, Barrichello and even Kobayashi are being pushed out.

Oh, you didn't mean that sport?

I'll try again.

Judd Trump's not been up to form lately, has he?

What, still no?

Erm, I suspect a Murray-Djokovic final that will be too close to call.

Still no?? I give up. I've no idea what you're talking about.

;)

He clearly stated "no American influence". 49ers is American right?

When I hear football I think the old American sport, not soccor. I don't think I've ever even seen a soccor game on TV besides for FIFA. When it comes to FIFA I support the US and Brazil.

You're talking about the sport with David Beckem, right?:D

Oh dear. Poor kid doesn't even know how to spell soccer. :D

Nice catch.

Do you guys call it soccer or football in Oz. Also, this being a football thread, how did the term soccer come about and how did the American sport get dealed the name football.

In Australia, they call soccer "soccer", and football "football". In New Zealand, we give everything sensible names to avoid confusion, e.g. soccer, rugby, league, Aussie rules, etc.

I've personally never understood soccer/European football from a spectator's point of view. It verges on cricket-level boredom. They run around a field, passing the ball to one another, taking shots at an enormous goal, miss, then do it all over, and usually end up in a tie. What's the point?

Now, if they played by Aztec rules, that'd get broadcast on a major network. Probably Fox.

It's weird isn't it, that this sport is the most popular sport in the world given that games can end in 0-0 draws quite regularly. I guess it's because all you need is a round ball to play, and your whole street or village (22 players) can play too.

European football( soccer)
It really isn't boring, if I watched the American version, and you the European version, we both may like them.
And I personally find the American version much more con fusing.

To get the thread started: did anyone see the Eden hazard incident last night?

Well my dear friends from Australia and USA:

You can cry, howl or do some jokes as much as you want, but this will not change the fact that (European) football is the most popular sport in the world, miles ahead of American football and Australian football.
Not to mention that EF Teams like Manchester United, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich are much better known around the globe then any American football or baseball team.:)

And for those thinking, European Football is boring: What about American Football? Two Teams running into eachother like bulls to reach a few meters - sorry: yards. (Touchdowns are as often as Goals in EF). And every two or three minutes a break for stupid commercials. An audience that is more interested to talk and eat instead to follow the game and support their team. (For European football, you never ever need the screen with the injunction: "Make some noise!");)

So finally: Although I'm a fan of Bayern Munich, I have to say: God bless the British for inventing modern football!

We apparently invented loads of sports in the UK. Football (aka Soccer!!), Rugby, Golf (invented in Scotland I believe), Tennis, Snooker, Boxing and of course the finest sport of all - Cricket.

I don't know if it is true but I was told once that golf is called golf because the word Golf stands for (or stood for) Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden.

I was once told, probably by the same guy, that Ph.D. stands for Piled Higher and Deeper, so who knows? :D

epickoala, there is already a football banter thread. http://www.zoochat.com/25/football-banter-thread-273516/
