Hi from NZ :)

Hi everyone,

I'm Brittany, 23 years old and I'm currently studying to become a Zookeeper. I have a saturday position at Auckland Zoo and I'm getting some hands on experience to help me become a Keeper.

I studied as a Veterinary Technician and have spent time working with dogs and studying Canine behaviour and training.

I own two cats, a dog and a husband who keep me extremely busy! I am active in many cat rescue organisations and I have volunteered for animal shelters in the past, but I am not currently.

Animals are my life and I would love to get to know other people who share the same beliefs and passions as me.

Thanks!

Hey Brittany, welcome.

Are you doing the CAM course at Unitec? I was hoping to get in this year but just missed out, so working hard on being better prepared for next year.

Hi Bailey13,

No, I'm using my section placement this year as a stepping stone to get me a spot in Auckland Zoo for the CWAM at Unitec next year. They only take 16 people I think and the competition for a spot is really high. Do you volunteer at the Zoo?

Filling out my volunteer form today :) Hoping to get on section with reptiles, which is my big passion.

I found out about the course just in time to squeak through for an interview this year, but only made the "maybe" list - I had pretty much zero time to prepare, but I'm currently gathering and working through the reading list and planning to do the section volley thing too. We are in competition, it seems. I promise not to accidentally nudge you into the alligator pond... :D

Are you doing the Cert in Animal Mgmt or Captive Wild Animal?

It's actually quite hard to get a section placement, and for an area like Reptiles, it's even harder because that's a very sought after spot. Once you get your green badge after 3 months, you go on a waiting list for a section placement. I might be able to help you though, I got a placement after 2 months :) I'm in Kidzone every Saturday if you're around.

I also have a few of the recommended reading books if you have Kindle?

And don't worry, Doris and I are pretty close ;)

I'm looking at the one year distance CAM - CWA course.

Alas, day job is on Saturdays, so our paths may not cross, but bound to meet up at some point, and thanks for the offer of help. I have kept native reptiles under a DoC licence for many years, so hoping that bit of experience will be of use, but I'll take what I can get.

As for Doris... I knew her before you were born :P
