Species you'd like to see in the UK?

it was 1940.....I guess you can smuggle a polar bear into any old holiday camp when there's a war on.

Neither was I.

Apparently Butlin's holiday camp at Skegness did have a zoo and it was still in operation in 1953.

Re: Chester Zoo polar bear. The only information from the June, July and August 1940 edition of Our Zoo News is a report of the arrival of 1.2 leopards and 0.1 polar bear. Both species being received from Butlins. A precaution against emeny bombing I expect.

I would love to see Black Wildebeest back in the UKi konw that Whipsnade and Marwell have both had them before.

I believe the musk ox are in a quarantine centre in the Netherlands at the moment

Marwell had a trio but never bred them. They weren't there a long time so I don't know if Blackpool's were two of these but I don't think so. I don't actually know what happened to the Marwell ones.

Whipsnade's were much earlier- I think they died out in the 1950's.

Have HWP made any changes to their paddocks for housing musk ox? Several years ago (maybe 4!) in a conversation with animal management when they were planning towards bringing musk ox in, we talked about the need to provide a covered shed for calving. Apparently musk ox drop calves in winter which is all fine and well in the high Arctic because it is cold and dry. In Scotland it is miserably cold and wet, enough to easily kill off musk ox calves.

I have a pictue of a female white taild Gnu ( Black Wildebeest) from London zoo taken in May 1914 sounds like they had a good turn out with this sepcies says that calves were born in five different years.

Shame Marwells never bred :(

was reading a book today wildlife in britain published by the AA and both Marwell and Blackpool are listed as having Black wildebeest so looks like they where different groups :)
