Football (Soccer) Teams

mstickmanp, how're David Beckham, Abel Xavier and Ruud Gullit working out at the Galaxy?

We get the occaisonal MLS highlights over here, depending on if it was on important game for Beckham, but it's not enough to follow his progress.

Lol the Brittish media do seem to love it if Beckham plays well

Pro Evo is the best football game out there by a mile!! Arsenal are ok if you want to watch aload of fancy player play but lose and cry because they dont like the physical game :p

Wait until they come to the land of the giants (aka Britannia Stadium) next year ;).

We've gained a somewhat unfair reputation as a "hoof" team, but we're more physical than Bolton (but can play it about a bit)!

oh and I'm a FIFA guy myself, but will be buying Pro Evo next year (for one reason;))

So far so good for the Galaxy as they are in first place in the Western Conference, but the playoffs is what matters more and of course winning the MLS cup.

I find it strange that the MLS is the only football league that doesn't have promtions and relegation.

Is it similar to basket ball, i.e. several leagues and the top teams compete for the overall winner in a knock out style comp?

As I understand it, the MLS is a closed league and every player's registrations are held by the MLS itself. The club bids for player contracts and there is a draft every year which distributes college players to the MLS clubs. There is a salary cap, but there is also a special player exception, which allows players like Beckham, Xavier, Angel, Donovan etc to recieve a higher wage than the others (I think it's 3 allowed per club).

The top 4 teams in the western and eastern conferences face each other in play-offs and the winner of these is the overall MLS winner. There is also the open cup, which I imagine to be their equivalent of the FA cup.

There are other leagues in the US though, such as the USL which has Stoke City's sister team, the Austin Aztex.
