New Bronx Zoo Blog

Writing this article series has really shocked me. I learned that most zoo exhibits are substationaly smaller than what the zoo says. This is most likely due to them counting the entire exhibit complex and visitor area instead of only the area availiable to elephants. The shocking thing is that many of these enclousures were built in the last 10 years-20 years.

For the LA Zoo you missed several places that are accessible to the elephants, which could be why you got 3.2 acres (barn included) instead of the 3.5 acres that the zoo mentions.

Sorry about that mstickmanp I generally try to get the whole exhibit outlined to the best of my ability, but not visiting most of the zoos means I have to estimate via google maps and online photos. But even with minor error such as the case of Los Angeles it does not change the exhibits high quality. Some of my numbers may be off by 10 to 15 percent but it will not be enough to change the quality overall.

Excellent job so far

Are you going to do the CLR elephant exhibits together?

Dallas Birmingham Denver etc? How are you doing your groupings?

I loosely group them based of geography such as what state they are in but there are some zoos that required more work and will be released in the last article. The next article contains zoos in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. And Tscandler71 the Clr exhibits will be separated also with Denver zoo being in the final article due to its complexity.

The third part of the series featuring zoos in oklahoma, kansas and missouri is now up.

Just a correction, Dickerson park holds 2,3 at this point. The elephant database hasn't been updated.

Tommorow i will post all of the zoos in texas. I have gotten several messages saying that i should pair my posts with pictures of the actual exhibit. The issue with that is that i have not been to many of these exhibits so i dont have pictures of most of the exhibits. If anyone would allow me to put your photos of the elephant exhibits on my blog i would greatly appreciate it and link the photo to the actual one on zoochat. Please send me a pm if you are interested. Thanks.

For Dallas, the elephants regularly have access to the hoofstock savanna. So they do have more than 3.1 acres

Thanks Loxodontaafrica I updated the article to include that fact and the 4th part is now posted.

This is a simply superb thread that I enjoy glancing through from time to time, and the breakdown of all of the elephant exhibits via overhead maps is excellent. Texas is a wonderful state for zoos, but places like Caldwell, Cameron Park, San Antonio, Fort Worth and El Paso have some tragically small elephant exhibits. On the flip-side, seeing massive new barns such as the one at Oklahoma City Zoo is rewarding, as elephants spend much of their time indoors when the weather is cold.

This week I have posted 2 new updates. The first is about the brand new Toyota Elephant Passage at Denver Zoo. The second update is the fifth part in the us elephant exhibit series focusing on zoos Florida, South Carolina and Georgia.
- Also the design of the site has been changed substantially and a new page now includes requests for photos for future blog posts.
