Oregon Zoo Oregon Zoo News 2013

A waste of funding imo. HTWT did not want Lily or Tusko transferred to their facility. Whatever it takes to appease the general public.... I suppose.

Lesser Flamingoes will make their debut on March 23rd until the African Rainforest aviary remodeling is complete. They will be the first flamingo flock at the zoo since the 1950's.

It is nice to see a zoo that commits itself to keep an all male group of lesser flamingos. The captive populations both in America and Europe are highly skewed toward males (over 2 males to 1 female), and such institutions are really needed. And in a few years, if the AZA breeding program is able to produce enough offspring, Oregon can get "promoted" to keep a breeding flock.

Brooke the female De Brazza's monkey has given birth to a single offspring. The zoo does not yet know if it's a male or a female since they'll spend most of their early life clinging to their mother.

Also the Flamingos debut today. I really hope the zoo makes as much of a hype with their California condor exhibit (that's due to open HOPEFULLY in the fall) as they are with the flamingos.

Five Humboldt penguin chicks have hatched at the Oregon Zoo. Keepers were lucky enough to get one of the hatching on film. This is the first time in four years since the zoo has had penguin babies.

Huh, didn't know Humboldt Penguins were the most threatened species;) I guess African and Galapagos Penguins aren't as endangered as I thought
