Auckland Zoo African Lion List

According to a studbook that I found yesterday, they are inbred.
all the white lions are.

In this case Merlin was bred from a wild-caught male Timba and a Jo'Burg-bred female called Bella. Bella's parents were Timba and Jo'Burg-bred female Timbi (whose father was also Timba).

Vinkel was bred from a Jo'Burg-bred male called Thor whose parents were Timba and Bella. Vinkel's mother was the female Timbi.

If you look into white lion family trees pretty much everything is like this.

I'm just in the process of making a family tree representing this. I have decided to make a website for lion family trees, like I did with the Sumatran tiger.

Apparently Kura's family tree has had inbreeding early on.
Kura was born to Mora and Mwangi (wild). Mora was born to Chips and Masai. Chips was born to Pongwe and Kalindi, while Masai was born to Shangashi and Ebbie. However, Shangashi was born to Shangani and Shashi. Kalindi's father was Shangani, and Pongi's mother was Shashi.

So I have finally got my lion record to the point where I am happy to share it.

This is basically a list of the African Lions that live/have lived at Auckland Zoo and the descendants from those individuals.

It starts with the 1998 pride including Tombo, Tonyi, Kura and Sheeka.

If you notice any mistakes or if you have anything to add please let me know and I will sort it out.

I can add a couple of bits of info:

Amali's male cubs (born 2004 at the Adelaide Zoo) were called Sarabi and Mikali. They were sent to Taiping Zoo and have sired six cubs each. Sarabi's son has also sired 4 cubs.

Amali's daughter at Monarto, Kiamba (2004), gave birth to her third litter in June 2013. They are called Mlinzi (male) and Makena (female). Amali also had a stillborn litter of four cubs in 2007, and a daughter called Jahzra (2011).

Tiombe (2004) has given birth to her second litter at Monarto in April 2013. They are called Jelani (male), Husani (female) and Nia (female). Tiombe also has a son called Inkosi (2007).

Is there any update to this list?

Is there any update to this list?

Yes many of the lions listed are now deceased.

After Lazarus left for Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Auckland Zoo’s pride was reduced to a non breeding pride of 1.3 lions. The male, Ngala, died from an injury received in a fight; and the lionesses have since died: Sheeka died 2017; and Kura and Amira in 2018.

Auckland Zoo have since received the two males from Wellington Zoo, Zulu and Malik; while Wellington Zoo hold two females, Djane and Zhara (Djembe died 2019).

Orana Wildlife Park have two prides. Pride One contains Leah, Meeka and Mambila; Pride Two contains Kahn, Kairangi, Tawhiri, Tama and Tua. All others not mentioned are deceased.

the site is down do you have any information you can share on this thread?

The site can be accessed at Family: Lion

The info will be rather out of date as I haven't updated it in years. Might upgrade it when I get some time. There's also the orangutan site at Family: Orangutan and was a tiger one which had a heap of information which I sadly lost due to the server shutting down as well as my own hard drive failure

Anyone know anything about Sheeka's parents?

All I know is that Priscilla at Orana Wildlife Park was a half sibling of Sheeka.

Mogo Zoo bred several litters around this time. In 1999 alone, there were at least three litters - the other two consisting of 1.2 sent to Taronga; and 2.0 sent to Monarto.
