So How About the Weather....

Right now its 34F but we are supposed to get up to 60f today. Slight cooldown through the weekend and again more rain next week. Next week it might even get snowy down here. Snow isn't extremely rare but we get one or two accumulations a year down here. Sounds confusing but we get a lot of snow just 90 percent of the time it melts when it hits the ground. Mostly because when its wet its mild and our Cold comes with the dip of the jet stream drying us out.

2013 has been a very very wet year so far in the American South and slightly milder than normal but still with cold snaps (21 is the area low for the winter). If Summer is Warmer and Wetter than normal it should be a good year for crops.

Well the blizzard snow is still everywhere although it has been melting faster than expected and already a foot of snow has melted just after a day or two after the storm. There's still a lot, though. We got a small dusting of snow yesterday morning and this Saturday we are suppose to get another 6in or so which will surely postpone my Bronx Zoo visit this weekend if that happens.

What's the weather likely to be like in March? Will it have cooled down much? February is usually the hottest month in NZ, is that the same in Oz?

Its been warm and sunny here pretty much all month, around 24C most days, sometimes up to 28C, very little rain really.

February is the hottest month where I live and should average 28C. For this month however, we have been averaging 30C with rain on just two days so far. We got a big dump one day, but it has done nothing for the drought-stricken landscape. Today is 35C and we will average about 31C for at least the next week.

A bush fire in the alpine region has been burning for more than a month, and has burned a couple thousand square kilometres of forest. Think of all the wildlife that died; think of the endangered animals who may just be pushed to the brink now. Although it has not been the worst summer on record, it is right up there. The bad news is that we can expect more summers like this in the future.

So what will the weather be like next month? Slightly cooler but still pretty dry? I am moving to Melbourne next month, so I'd like to have an idea of what to prepare for :D Still 24C here, and the same for tomorrow. No sign of any real rain yet.

You guys do get terrible bushfires, and the impact on endangered species (especially those with limited ranges) could be severe. What species are in most danger of extinction from the current fires? Leadbeater's Possum was massively affected by the 2009 Bushfires, but I don't know if there are any where the current fires are.

It should be cooler - about 24C from memory.

I am thinking that mountain Pygmy possum might be in danger.

Yup, crossing the ditch to start a PhD, should be good (I'm most excited about the ZOOS!!! :cool:). 24C sounds great, should certainly be able to cope with that.

Fingers crossed for the pygmy possums, although at least Healesville has a decent captive population of them.

I did not snow last night as predicted. Lucky for me as my Bronx Zoo trip now continues as scheduled!

The weather here in Essex UK is dull, it has been cold too this last week last Sunday it rained all day until the evening the it turned to snow some of it was still lying around on Thursday. Today it started frosty and very bright and sunny for a change, but a bank of fog rolled in and the temperature plummeted I wanted to do some work outside, but as I will be out all week I'm catching up on zoochat instead
we had freezing temperatures from the 14th of Jan until 25th, not a lot of snow but what landed ans settled froze solid for best part of 2 weeks.

snow used to be a rare event in the south but we have had a lot in the 15 years i have lived here, we also have lots of mist and cloud being rather flat and near the see, and if the wind drops as it has today it just sits there in the cold weather, some times for days.

I saw Cape tribulation on Wild down under on sky and it brought back such happy memories of our holiday to Oz in 2001 and it looked WARM............ I'll post few photos of some of our weather this winter in our back garden or yard. for nanoboy

I'll PM you about it later. In other weather news:

Just got off the phone with a friend who lives in Northern Tip of Newfoundland.
He said that since early this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling.
The temperature is dropping way below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force.
His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare.

He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in...

Believe it or not, it actually snowed in the middle of the day today here in Tucson, Arizona. Not enough to stick on the ground, but there was snow falling and the mountains have a nice blanket of white. Here is a photo my boss took of me out in the parking lot while the white stuff was coming down.
