Griffith Park Zoo (Closed) Griffith Park Zoo Map?

That would be fine. I look forward to seeing you there. I worked at the old zoo several times as there were still animals there when I first started. Some chimp names at the old zoo:Charlie, Toto,Judy, Jeannie,Sally, and Bonnie. With the exception of Charlie, all of the chimps moved into the new zoo. Charlie died prior to the rest of them moving to the new zoo. Glass was installed in front of the old chimp area as Charlie was quite a spitter.

Does anybody who visited the old LA Zoo know if this photo is of the "large elephants" exhibit (number 48 on the map)?

I also found that photo in Los Angeles Public Library Photo Collection and most of the photos taken by Ralph Morris are wrongly identified to be taken at the LA Zoo or Griffith Park Zoo, when they were actually taken at the San Diego Zoo, so I'm doubtful.

Thank you very much for finding the map!
I'll definitely print out a copy to look at next time I can make it to the old zoo.

Those photos are not LA, but early San Diego. Gpz has never exhibited moose or vicuna to the best of my knowledge and never at it's current location.

The map shown above has both moose and vicuña listed.

It's possible the map is wrong. Perhaps they were scheduled to be exhibited and for some reason it didn't happen when the map was published. It wouldn't be the first time this has happened.

I noticed Moose and Vicuna being listed and was totally shocked. I remember seeing a moose in captivity for the first and only time, on my initial visit to the San Diego Zoo in 1964. I don't ever remember seeing Moose or Vicuna at the old or current institution, and like Michael said, could have been intended future hopefuls. Of course, by the time the old zoo closed around 1965, I was only 10 years old. I don't even remember an ape house, but do remember the chimpanzees and they seemed to be in an outdoor enclosure, not in a building. Water Buffaloes, Cheetah and Nilgai escape my memory as well, although I very much remember Cheetah and Nilgai once the current facility opened in 1966.

Thank you for the map Jonas, a trip down my childhood memory lane.

I do remember looking through the photographs of the old zoo on the Los Angeles public library's website and I actually saw photos of kids feeding Aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) and Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), but like Mstickmanp said, this could hve been at San Diego Zoo

Jonas will be in the LA area from March 26 to the 29.Let me know who wants to meet up. I spoke to a former keeper who started working at the GPZ 1962 and retired in 1990. He vaguely remembers vicuna(not 100% positive), but does not remember any moose. He will look thru his photos and see if he has one and I will share it.

Zoochatters in LA, Jonas will be at the zoo on March 27. I plan on taking him to the old zoo in the afternoon. If anyone wants to go, let me know. I think we will meet at the front entrance of the zoo and drive over to the old zoo around 2:30.
I look forward to meeting some of you.
