acetaminophen + dead mouse = brown snake control in Guam

For ZooChatters east of Cape Cod, acetaminophen = paracetamol.

Alan

I did not know that.

So this whole operation is not expected to actually benefit Guam at all, as there is nothing left there to benefit from reduced snake numbers? The entire point is to reduce the risk of the snakes being introduced to another location?

Of course it will benefit Guam when the snakes are reduced. Habitat will become avaible for Kingfishers, Rails, Fruitdoves and other species which are now in captivity or released on neighboor-islands and can then return / re-introduced to their native place !

There is so little left in Guam surely it would be better to try to catch everything they can, and then completly flood the island with bait in an attempt to kill all the snakes? Then just reintroduce things, and gradually build the island back up

2,000 baby mice being dropped, hardly seems an adequate number for the estimated tens of thousands of Brown tree snakes in Guam to make much of a dent. 200,000 maybe. Cost, I'm sure, is the reason for such a minuscule effort.

Is there a bait that is reptile-specific, and wouldn't affect other vertebrates (or any invertebrates)? One would think this wouldn't be too difficult to develop, as there are other taxa-specific toxins. Are there any native reptiles that would need to be protected if such a bait was used to eradicate the brown tree snakes?
